While shopping at a record store, my wife and I realized we have no Willie Nelson (despite me liking him and her being a big fan). She picked up two cheap LPs - "Greatest Hits (And Some That Will Be)" and "Willie & Family Live."

But anyway, just got me thinking, there's got to be a top notch (single disc?) collection out there, and one of youse has got to know it, right?!

I say, just pick up the classic early-70s albums:
The Red Headed Stranger
Shotgun Willie
Phases and Stages

and that will be a brilliant intro to his work.
There is, of course a LOT more to hear, but those three in particular are great records that deserve to be heard as ALBUMS.

He's had a 60 year career so there is no definitive single disc but this comes about as close as it gets.

This would be my pick and I own at least 30 Willie albums including two boxed sets.

Haven't heard Shotgun or Phases, but Red Headed Stranger is brilliant. Just be prepared that it's minimalistic. Most of the songs are just Willie and his guitar, or with barebones backing. Not a real rousing disc.

When I was growing up, I played this disc for a couple of guitar-playing friends of mine. They couldn't stop laughing at how sparse it was. They were not impressed at the time, but I'll bet big $$ that view has changed.

I'm currently listening to Miles Davis and am reminded that Miles had some glowing quote about Willie being the finest living singer. Unfortunately I can't find the exact quote.

Yeah we are listening to the Greatest Hits double LP while painting the living room. It's great.

agreed on those two being the best by far. I have about 20 albums and I don't think I've ever heard anything bad by him, but those two really stand out by quite a bit.

I've got some 2-disc compilation that, while fairly comprehensive, is pretty bland. It's too safe.
