Every fucking commercial these days feels like I'm watching The Shins ran through that one bitch with the squeeky voice ran through a fucking walgreens original song
.

It sucked to begin with, I just have to hear it all of the time.

i love indie rock. the 90s indie rock/pop sound is kind of making comeback. can't wait for good songwriting to come back into fashion as well.

Yeah like that fucknig song with the guy p[laying basketball with his daughter and talking about car insurance and how she'll prefer her car insurance over her loving dad when he dies or whatever the fuck it's trying to imply.

reminded me of Major League by Pavement

Depends on the band and the song.
I don't love it, as a genre, as much as I used to, but there is still a lot of great music out there that you could call "indie" I guess.

- I don't see commercials anymore, almost ever, in large part because of these same feelings.
- "Indie rock" is getting a little hard to pin down. But if you mean Clap-Shout Etsy bands, then yes, I fucking hate that shit with a fury.

i've been thinking a lot about that aesthetic. It's something that in a vacuum appeals to me. The human aspect of percussion at its most basic and communal. But boiled down to an aesthetic it's an eye rolling and cloying cheap road to authenticity.

Like anything, used right it's great, but the world needs to take a break from it.

I think of this genre as Paste approved Americana. But maybe now I'll think of it as Clap-Shout Etsy bands.

does Paste still exist?

I have no fucking idea what they're called. Edward Sharpe etc was an early one, but I swear a few others have crept into my hearing range over the last 2 or 3 years. I'll be doing something and then from the kitchen radio hear
<CLAP>.......HEY!..........
<CLAP>.......HEY!..........

and be a little disgusted. Sometimes they say the band name but it's always some Etsy cute bullshit and honestly I never remember it. The Head and The Heart or the Something and the Whale? Maybe that's it. Remember when we thought the Decemberists were too pretentious?

aka baumbach rock

there was a thread on hipinion that touched on this, i believe

something about the scrumptious life. it was a pretty good read, about 9 million pages in true hpn fashion, but pretty thoroughly encapsulated the millenial aesthetic of cutesy artisanal everything.

i heard a podcast the other day where the guy was interviewing the lead singer of my chemical romance and it seemed like he was super excited that this guy was making music again because he loved them in his twenties. that's when I realized how far behind me my youth was already, when grown adults are nostalgic for something that I thought was teen garbage the first time around. It's like my old age has interest paid on top of it.

Back in the radio station days the "indie rock" label was just a blanket term for music that wasn't top 40, punk, "alternative", metal, hip-hop, adult contemporary, rap, jazz, classical or electro. There's a predominance of shitty music in every genre, "indie rock" isn't unique. Just like it's always been, people in general will like and buy a lot of bad music -- some of which may be categorically "indie". And businesses like to sell shit with commercials containing popular (often bad) music. The fact is when you actually pay attention to commercials, all this thick rimmed glasses garbage comprises a disproportionately small amount within that form of media. You, your memories, perspective and identity are just getting older. Advertising practices tend to stay the same.

That grouplove song was truly horrendous.

I'm so far out of touch with music that I ought to just quit and take that job next fall in Shanghai teaching orchestra.

I find it hard to believe that the people that like that crap would find anything to like in my music.

That song is awful, but I sort of like this one.

Also, I had this goddamn song stuck in my head the other day after hearing it on the radio at work.
This is probably the worst song I've heard in a few years.

Sorry for inflicting that on anyone who's managed to avoid hearing it thus far.
