Haven't tried this yet but I did pick one up last weekend. Also, just ordered a Perennial Saison de Lis to be shipped to me for pick up at my shop from one of their other locations in San Francisco. I've not seen it anything from them in LA and it appears that this is the first beer they've carried from Perennial at any of their locations. Will report back after I try it.

Some recents:

Noble Aleworks Galaxy Showers - Another entry in their Single Hop DIPA series. Pretty good as always.

"La Vermontoise" Saison With Spelt and Amarillo Hops - a collaboration between Hill Farmstead & Brasserie De Blaugies. Pretty good but not great. I think the only other beer I've had from Hill Farmstead was the Artic Saison that estone posted up above. That was probably a little better than this. There was so much dead yeast in the bottom of this beer, more than I've ever seen in a commercially brewed beer. Took me back to my homebrewing days.

Logsdon Peche n Brett - this is the Logsdon Seizon Bretta with Peaches added. SO F'N GOOD.

Daaaamn. I had another one of theirs when we visited Hood River in August, I think it was a Witt?

I used Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel as the base for a batch of chili I made today. It probably tasted good as beer too.

I can see how the sweetness would be good in chili.

And in a semi-related note, I turn 39 this year, so next year is the big one. Wife's already on me to declare what kinda fun trip I want to do to celebrate, and the first thing that came to mind was a pilgrimage to Weihenstephaner.

nice, haven't had that one yet. if you ever come across Abraxas or Sump, do not hesitate to purchase.

Had a few more great ones:

Prairie Gold Mosiac - It's the Prairie Gold (a Saison Brett) dry hopped with a ton of mosiac hops. Really, really great.

Firestone Walker Sucaba Barley Wine - this had been hiding out in the back of my refrigerator since 2012. So good.

Also just bought tickets to this:

http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/festival/

I probably know less than half of the breweries that will be pouring there so if anyone has any recommendations, pass them along.

Thoughts from me on any breweries that I have any suspicion you MIGHT not already know about:

8 Wired... fabulous NZ brewery. Have had 2 of theirs, one was a manuka-smoked something or other, and I recall thinking both were excellent AND unusual, which for me at this point is a luxury.

Wesveleteren will be there...?!

Artisan beverage Coop from here in MA... They make something called "Ginger Libation" that my wife loves more than life itself. It's about 8% ABV, good balance of sweet / dry / booze, that features mostly ginger and pineapple. Granted this may not be something you have any interest in, but if you or someone with you is into that sort of thing, this one is really fucking good. If I could figure out how to make it at home, bukkseks.

Cambridge Brewing Company: These guys are in Kendall Square, a few miles from my house. "Old" for a micro, I think they go back to 89? Their sixpacky fare is solid but not worth the real estate in your liver on a day like this. Some of their big exciting stuff is pretty good, particularly a huge motherfucker of a stout I had there once that was excellent, but everything else is just "pretty good," and not up to par with the heavyweights in attendance at this festival.

Looks like Hill will be there, somehow... Obviously give it a shot, and try to do it early / first if you can, because "subtle" is his thing, so if you try it after 14 DIPAs etc, it will suffer. Really curious what they'll have on offer. He makes everything from big stouts and porters to pales so gentle it's like kitten whiskers nuzzling your taste buds.

Mystic, also from here... They actually make some fine belgian inspired BIG stuff. If you're in that mood, I'd recommend them. They have their shit figured out on the execution side, from what I've seen.

Pretty Things... a local favorite of mine. Adjust your expectations down from "the most exciting beer I'll have all day" to "a solid, unique, different take on some standard styles" and you should be good. Part of my love stems from them being local, and being cool. Owner recently went on a Twitter rant against the old, illegal, and still very much alive practice of selling tap space at Boston bars. This is a brewery you should try, for sure.

Never heard of Tree House.

jealous. do they have a pour list yet?

forgive me if you already know/tried some of these - i'm leaving out the ones i know you've had (Prairie, Jolly Pumpkin, etc)

Arizona Wilderness (Arizona) - have heard good things/hype...but you know how that goes.

Crooked Stave (Colorado) - my absolute local fave - not sure if you've had anything by them yet, but if not i'd be pretty upset with you if you don't hit them up - especially knowing your tastes. these are the guys that finally helped me to see the light in regards to sour beer.

Hill Farmstead (Vermont) - #2 on my "want" list

Jester King (Texas) - do you get them out there? if no, worth a try. i've only just had my first (Wytchmaker) and it was a fantastically funky/citrusy Rye IPA.

Side Project Brewing (Missouri) - so this is the, ahem, side project of the head brewer from Perennial that we were talking about a few posts back. really was hoping to get a taste at GABF but never did. can't imagine anything but excellence here.

i'm pretty sure you are already all over Beachwood?

Cellarmaker - these are the guys i poured for at GABF...so yeah, friend beer. but you'd be a fool not to stop by. these guys WILL be mentioned in the same breath as everyone on this page in the not so distant future. they are just starting to bust out their barrel aged stuff. their pales are VERY hop forward, but not obnoxiously so. so aromatic. really excellent. (Connor was just named a Zagat 30 under 30 today!) anyways, if you stop by and chat with Con or Tim, tell 'em Jason from Colorado sent you

Rare Barrel - fantastic wilds/sours - a favorite at GABF. they just collaborated with Cellarmaker on Tangerang (from ratebeer): Golden sour aged in oak barrels and dry-hopped with mosaic, citra, and columbus. The Rare Barrel brought the golden sour, and Cellarmaker brought the perfect hop combination. The bright acidity of the golden sour complements the juicy tropical fruitiness from the blend of hops.

Sante Adairius - #1 on my "WANT" list. i'm dying to try something, anything from SARA.

this is pretty damn close to my dream beer fest...enjoy bastard!

Tree House is supposed to be pretty good though I've never tried them. They're out in the middle of MA somewhere.

Just found this:

http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/the-festival-tap-list/

Damn, its going to be even harder to prioritize than I thought. A bunch of the places I know well and like a lot (like Prairie and Hair of the Dog) but thought I could skip due to familiarity are bringing rarities. I also see that a lot of the foreign breweries are bringing collab beers done with breweries that I love. A japanese brewery collaborating with Hair of the Dog! Yes, please.

Unfortunately, this festival is about 25-30 miles away so I have to drive unless I can convince FemG to drive so my sampling will be more limited than I'd like. I have WhiskyLive the night before with 3+ hours of whisky tasting which I'm not driving to so I'll likely also be sporting a hangover.

thanks for the recommendations (squirg too)

I've had plenty of Jester King and Beachwood. I like some of Jester King. They are capable of greatness but I've had a few misses from them too. Beachwood is great but I'll probably skip since they are local. I like what I've had from Crooked Stave but it's only one from them and maybe a couple of collabs they did with others. Looking forward to Wesveleteren, Hill Farmstead and Saint Adairus. I'm also really hoping that Firestone Walker is bringing some of the barrelworks sour experiments. They are supposed to be really great. I'll probably also have to try at least one of those Black Damnation releases from Struise. I think that they are the Black Albert aged in various high-end casks. I remember something about one being aged in a Caol Ilya cask. My bottle shop is charging over $40/bottle for them. Will add all the others recommended to the list to look for.

My god, I probably wouldn't drive to an event like that. With my size, having to drive would mean trying like 6 small samples, maybe 8 tops, and then having to eat a bunch and hang out for awhile.

I wish there were a better option than driving but public transportation is not very good in LA to begin with and any route that didn't take a couple of hours each way would go right through south central, and even an uber/lyft would be pretty expensive roundtrip. The pours are only 2 ounces each so over 4 hours, I should be able to taste a lot without overdoing it. I suspect that I'll spend so much time in lines that it could actually be hard to really overdo it unless actively trying.

I think I'm going to this on Saturday.

Quote:
11.1 Dia De Los Muertos Festival De Cervezas

Día De Los Muertos Festival De Cervezas
All Souls Day Beer Festival
On November 1st from 4-10 PM, Bazi and Imperial Bottleshop (3090 SE Division St) are joining forces to co-host a new annual autumn beer event, Día De Los Muertos Festival De Cervezas (All Souls Day Beer Festival).

The Día De Los Muertos Festival De Cervezas will take place concurrently at both locations offering festival goers the opportunity to walk less than half mile between the two and experience an eclectic mix of death-themed beers, beers named after the dead, and Mexican-influenced beers that pay homage to the country of the holiday’s origin. While close in proximity, the two bars are far apart in their approach to beer. Bazi features Belgian-inspired beers from near and far, and Imperial focuses on local American craft beer.
For $10, attendees will get a commemorative glass goblet and two drinks tickets, each good for a 5 oz pour. Additional drink tickets will be offered for $2 each, and every drink ticket used will automatically get entered into hourly raffles for exciting prizes. Pre-purchase is encouraged and check-in can take place at either location. Visit Eventbrite to purchase tickets.

Here’s the beer lineup:
Ballast Point Dead Ringer Marzen
Burnside Dapper Skeleton
Snipes Mountain Dos Borrachos
Alameda Zombie Blood
Heathen Bourbon Barrel Aged Epitaph
Rogue Double Dead Guy
Brouwerij Het Anker Lucifer
Unibroue La Fin du Monde
Huyghe La Guillotine

So I've spent some time going through the Tap list for this Festival and here's the stuff that's catching my eye most:

Allagash Nancy (A Sour Ale with Cherries & Brett)
Anchorage Time Waits for No Man (Stout aged in a Laphroaig Cask)
Arizona Wilderness Denmark in the Desert Imperial Peach Porter (Peaches Soured with Lacto added to a porter aged in Pappy Van Winkle Barrels) but everything they are pouring looks interesting
Artisan Beverage Cooperative Ginger Libation
Baird Wabi-Sabi JPA (Japanese Pale Ale with Green Tea & Wasabi)
Blaugies Biere Darbyste (Farmhouse Ale with Fig Juice)
Bluejacket Figure 8 (Scotch Ale w/ Figs, Cinnnamon, Nutmeg & Brown Sugar Aged in Old Scout Bourbon Barrels)
Bottle Logic Passionate Dragon (Collab w/ Arizona Wilderness - Saison w/ Dragonfruit, Passionfruit & Bay Leaf)
Brekeriet Cassis (Sour Ale w/ Black Currants & Brett)
Brewfist Spaceman IPA
Cantillion Fou'Foune (Apricot Lambic)
Cantillion Lambic d'Haute Densite (High Density Lambic)
Cantillion Vigneronne (Lambic w/ Muscat Grapes)
Crooked Stave Petite Sour (Blueberry Sour)
Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze
Firestone Walker Barrelworks Agrestic (Sour Ale)
Fyne Ales Fynebank (Collab w/ Springbank Distillery on a Peat Smoked Golden Ale)
Hair of the Dog Pannepooch Reserva
Hair of the Dog Utrecht Strong Ale
Hill Farmstead (would love to try all of them but will likely only get one or two)
Le Trou du Diable Dulcis Succubus & Saison du Tracteau (Saisons)
Magic Rock Salty Kiss (Gose w/ Gooseberries, Sea Buckthorn & Sea Salt)
Monkish (all look interesting but will probably skip since a local brewery)
Oxbow Aboreal (Sour Ale)
Prairie Coolship Truck (collab w/ Evil Twin on Wild Fermented Ale)
Prairie Brouwerij Okie (know nothing about this one but love Prairie)
Ritterguts Original Gose
Sante Adairius Saison Bernice & West Ashley
Saint Somewhere Cynthiana
Shiga Kogen Adamu (with Hair of the Dog)
Shiga Kogen Monkey Claws (With Hair of the Dog)
Side Project Saison du Ble
Side Project Blueberry Flanders
Westvleteren XII
Struise (All those Black damnations but can't try them all)
Telegraph Saison Old Fashioned (probably will skip since they are semi local)
The Rare Barrel Map of the Sun (Golden Sour with Apricots)
Toccalmatto B Space Invader (Black IPA) & Zona Cesarini (IPA)
Tree House Julius (IPA w/ a 100 pt score on Rate Beer)

One of the Cellarmaker pours is TBD so I'll try to stop by there too. No way I can try all that I want from above though. I think that's my starting list to whittle down from though.

So Fem G stepped up and volunteered to drive so yep, that's pretty accurate although she says that she thought I was a lot more drunk the night before when she picked me up after Whiskylive.

So the good news is I was able to try A LOT. I think I probably tried close to 40 beers although some of those were a few sips off of a beer she got or another friend who I bumped into had. The bad news is she wanted to go to the gym first and I told her it was ok if she was 15 -30 minutes late getting back. Give a girl an extra 15-30 minutes and it quickly becomes an hour. So we ended up almost an hour late and by the time we got there, Westvleteren and Sante Adairius were completely out of beer. A few other things I was excited to try were gone too. Other breweries staged their offerings so at random times they'd bring out the rarities and if you didn't know to be in line, you missed out. I was in a long line to try some Crooked Stave sours and they ran out of the special bottles right before I made it to the counter. Still a great event though and I was grateful to not have to drive.

Here's what I remember having:

Allagash Nancy (A Sour Ale with Cherries & Brett)
Allagash Interlude (Farmhouse Ale aged in Wine Barrels)
Anchorage Time Waits for No Man (Stout aged in a Laphroaig Cask)
Arizona Wilderness Old Brood (Quad w/ Brett aged in red wine barrels)
Arizona Wilderness Hellsgate (Imperial Smoked Saison Aged in a Tequila Barrel)
Artisan Beverage Cooperative Ginger Libation
Blaugies Biere Darbyste (Farmhouse Ale with Fig Juice)
Bluejacket Figure 8 (Scotch Ale w/ Figs, Cinnnamon, Nutmeg & Brown Sugar Aged in Old Scout Bourbon Barrels)
Bottle Logic Passionate Dragon (Collab w/ Arizona Wilderness - Saison w/ Dragonfruit, Passionfruit & Bay Leaf)
Brekeriet Cassis (Sour Ale w/ Black Currants & Brett)
Brekeriet Brillant (Saison Brett)
Brewfist Spaceman IPA
Bruery Mash & Coconut (Barley Wine w/ Toasted Coconut)
Cellarmaker Imperial Coffee and Cigarettes (Smoked Coffee Porter)
Fyne Ales Fynebank (Collab w/ Springbank Distillery on a Peat Smoked Golden Ale)
Hair of the Dog Pannepooch Reserva (quad)
Hill Farmstead Arther (Saison)
Magic Rock Salty Kiss (Gose w/ Gooseberries, Sea Buckthorn & Sea Salt)
Oxbow Aboreal (Sour Ale)
Prairie Brouwerij Okie (Sour Amber Ale aged in Wine Barrels)
Saint Somewhere Cynthiana (Farmhouse Ale)
Shiga Kogen Adamu (with Hair of the Dog)
Side Project Saison du Ble
Struise Black Damnation (Forget which one)
Telegraph Saison Old Fashioned (Saison w/ Orange Peel Aged in a Bourbon Barrel)
The Rare Barrel Map of the Sun (Golden Sour with Apricots)
Toccalmatto B Space Invader (Black IPA) & Zona Cesarini (IPA)
Tree House Julius (IPA w/ a 100 pt score on Rate Beer)

Almost everything was really good. The standouts of the day were probably the Fynebank Ale, the Treehouse Julius, the Italian IPAs from both Brewfist and Toccalmatto, and the beers from Brekeriet. There were a ton of great saisons, farmhouse ales, and sours though. I had a bunch in those styles that I hadn't planned to try and don't really remember half of the ones I tried. Just hard to stand out for that style when there was so many great ones.

Squirg - you should be all over Tree House. Julius is really a world class IPA. I also really liked Oxbow from Maine.

Arizona Wilderness kinda reminded me of the Bruery a bit stylistically. Out there and always interesting but more interesting than truly great. I tried everything the Bruery had (which was mostly stuff that wasn't on their pour list) and I thought they were all really good in 2 oz pours but some of them would become much too sweet or strange if I had to have a full beer of it. I think they had about 6 beers but the mash and coconut is the only one I remember by name.

My least favorite beers of the day were the quads and stouts. I tend to not like the big boozy, really sweet style desert stouts and quads until they get a little bottle age on them. I suspect a bunch of the ones I had would be great in a few years.

If anyone has any questions on the beers above, I could probably provide a little more information but I didn't really take any notes.

Well shit, now I have to figure out how to get some around here. Thanks for the heads up, and JEALOUS. I spent the weekend brewing 3 batches, so don't bother knocking cuz my closet is a rockin'.

...and they're 72 miles away from here, in the middle of nowhere. They're closer than Alchemist, but when you don't have a car, anything not on the rail lines might as well be in Siberia. Shiiit. Those hours ain't too conducive neither.

11AM Saturday sounds like a perfect excuse for a nice motorcycle ride, weather permitting.
