"clown" vs "Real fucking deal" seemed to imply some sort of test that DR didn't pass. Like, because he's Canadian or something.

No way, because NQ Arbuckle definitely pass that imaginary test and they are Canadian as fuck.

I went back and re-read the old Daniel Romano thread to see if I could find any negative remarks on Romano by you and didn't. Your opinion of him change somewhere along the way? I think Cap'n and Stu have probably passed me as the board's biggest Romano cheerleaders but I still like him. He does get a little "paint by the numbers" in his songwriting and does camp it up a little but I think that's probably just his personality. See him live and tell me he's not the real deal. His George Jones covers were really impressive.

I haven't seen him live, true, but yeah, somewhere along the way I grew tired of Romano. Come Cry With Me just never clicked and something about the way he carries himself irritates me. *shrug*.

Well, I don't share your opinion but I can understand it. Come Cry With Me isn't half the album that Sleep Beneath the Willow is and it's a fine line between aping the past and honoring it. I can sort of see the path of paint by the numbers songwriting --> songs from formula not heart ---> not real deal ---> also has goofy personality/schtick = clown. I was wondering initially whether you meant clown in a completely derogatory way even because if you hadn't I might have been inclined to agree.

Ultimately, he's redeemed for me by: (a) he really knows his country music and clearly loves it, and (b) he's a great performer both live and on record.

And while we're heaping scorn on either of these guys, let me say I hate how much Sturgill gets annoyed by the Waylon comparisons. While I get that he wants to be considered his own artist, the comparisons are a huge compliment and the songs which are the most Waylon like are his best ones.

I agree with you here, Beeg. Sturg should own that a little more, but let's face it--he's a damn ol' weirdo.

I'm not sure I meant that DR is a clown in a totally derogatory way--the guy is super talented and has made some music I legitimately liked/like. And FWIW, I'd still pay money to see him live.
