Fucking definitely that one.

Not a great year and I saw far fewer movies than I usually do but a few of my favorites:

Whiplash
Locke
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler
Mistaken For Strangers

Can The Wind Rises count as 2014 since the English dub debuted in the US this year?

I'm having a hard enough time just thinking of all of the 2014 movies I've seen.

Whenever I see the poster for Nightcrawler I think that it's Lawrence Fishburn's face for a second, and I think it looks really cool. Then I remember that it's Jake Gyllenhaal and I lose interest.

Man I forgot Lego Movie was 2014. That might actually be my favorite.

That's unfortunate because it's a pretty decent movie. Not a Gyllenhall fan, I take it?

In no particular order:

Under the Skin
The Babadook
Belle
Ida
Inherent Vice

Have not seen, but looking forward to:
Goodbye to Language
Foxcatcher

Didn't like as much as the rest of the world:
Boyhood

I forgot about this one. Pretty bleak but I liked it quite a bit.

I thought both Force Majeure and Calvary were very good films whose endings really didn't work.

Of those listed that I'm familiar with I'd like to see:

The Babadook
Mr. Turner
Birdman
Foxcatcher
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

I guess he's OK. For whatever reason it makes that image seem less cool.

I think these are all of the 2014 movies I've seen, roughly ranked:

The Wind Rises (English dub)
The Lego Movie
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Captain America 2
Big Hero 6
Guardians of the Galaxy
Boyhood
X-Men: Days of Future Past
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Hobbit 3

I liked all of these a lot except Hobbit 3. It was OK. And HTTYD 2 was just a big spectacle, but I enjoyed it. None of the charm of the first movie, though, which I think is one of the better animated films - definitely one of the best Dreamworks movies - of the past ten years or so.

I see mostly kids' movies these days, for obvious reasons. Maybe that's not so different from what I watching 5+ years ago, but I feel like I used to see more foreign/indie stuff. I think the stuff I have the hardest time getting to see now is actually horror since I can't watch it with either my kids or my wife. Also not really sure which horror movies from the past few years I should have seen.

I liked Boyhood, but maybe it's pretty telling that I didn't really feel like it was better than half of the superhero movies from 2014.

Looks like some good suggestions in this thread, but I'm not sure where to start with them. I could stand to see some more Mike Leigh movies so maybe I'll start with Mr. Turner (if I ever get time).

A few I've liked, roughly in order:

The Grand Budapest Hotel
Gone Girl
Obvious Child
The One I Love (streaming on Netflix)
The Trip to Italy (streaming on Netflix)
Interstellar
They Came Together

I was hoping we'd be able to catch Interstellar in the theater, but it looks like we may miss it. I've heard seeing it in IMAX is really worthwhile.

I loved all of these, despite being youth-targeted mega-studio blockbusters (with the notable exception of that giant vat of Astroglide for Oscar voters known as Boyhood, which I also quite enjoyed).

Without question, though, my favorite of them all was Guardians. Just. So. Great.

I also enjoyed Interstellar and Nightcrawler, though to a slightly lesser degree than these. Most pleasantly surprising trip to the movies was The Rock's version of Hercules - quite entertaining.

Still need to see Inherent Vice, Gone Girl, Whiplash and Birdman.

I think The Lego Movie is the best animated American movie of this decade so far. I have to say "American" because I really loved The Wind Rises.

Now I really, really want to see Inherent Vice more than anything else. It opened here last weekend, but it wasn't playing anywhere we could get to at a time that would work for us.

So instead my wife and I went home and watched The Master on Netflix. I'd been wanting to watch it for the past couple of years but had never really had time or felt like I was in the mood for it. It's definitely not my favorite PTA movie, and it was unsatisfying in a lot of ways. But man, it left an impression. Some incredible performances and shots, at the very least.

A screener of Inherent Vice leaked if you're interested?

Thanks, but I really want to try and see it in a theater if possible. I'm hoping it will make it to more places around here. I mean it is playing in several theaters in the Atlanta area, but it just didn't happen to be close enough and playing at the right time for us to see it last weekend.
