you'd be surprised, i'm actually exceedingly tolerant -- even welcoming, gosh! -- of dissenting opinions. i just mostly don't enjoy it when people won't accept that opinions are opinions, and i'm allowed to have my likes and dislikes and so are you. spinach is good for you, it's yet to be scientifically proven that, say, ali farka toure is and that you have to like him or you're a mouthbreathing moron. (random example, no subtext there)

on to more fun topics.
like the fact that i miss you bunches colin, and i don't get on the interweb too much anymore for pleasure. newspaper life is bananerz. i do indeed not like it.

i also met elvis costello recently and that was ridiculously cool. i turned into chris farley. i met earl and louise scruggs too. louise was mean to me. i think that's a rite of passage in nashville. oh and you should check out andy's new club in london if you haven't. in kilburn, called the luminaire...

i should start a new topic. sorry to hijack and sorry if i was insulting toward your friend.

That could take time... tell you what, don't know if they still have that avatar, but the screen grab of the Dook kid crying at the Garyland game is definitely top 10.

let's not turn this thread into a bashing of Fast. the dude isn't the only one that feels that way.

I agree, Drinky.... let the Mars Volta bashing extend towards everyone who likes that album, and not make that comment fnb-specific. Thanks...

...and there's nothing wrong with Funhouse though, with the prog-jammy direction S-K are supposedly taking with this new album, I'm sure funhousers and voltards alike will feel the same way FNB does...

I don't really think anything that I posted about him qualifies as "bashing". I said he never contributed much here, on Obner, which he didn't. A few of his own threads sparked some debate (which were largely antagonistic against him), and of course he participated in those. I just can't recall him taking part in any discussions that weren't centered around him/his site/his opinions. I do realize that he's not the only one who hasn't found a whole lot to post about here. I often feel the same way myself, but obviously to a lesser extent.

And with the Mars Volta thing, I'm kinda half-kidding. I realize I can't use them as a standard for all things objectively bad, but I know I'm not alone in finding them completely dismissable.

Also, I love Funhouse, and I think that's a fine choice for the #1 album of all time. As I said, FnB's site is a good resource with a lot of good lists, but I find most of his new music lists to be head-scratchers. I'm certainly not "bashing" him for that. Those are his opinions.

Not a huge fan of Fester's Bucket of Festering Puss or whatever it's called, but homeslice wrote some solid reviews about The Blasters and The Microphones. He was a snarky fucker - and I loved most every minute of it. Opinionated yes, but he had some vicious retorts and offered a peck sig-worthy quotes.

I remember way back in '00 after officially joining the CMJ ranks (under a diff. callsign), Fast blasted me for condemning the precious SLC Punk joint. He recommended I 'try tearing myself away from my refuge of sarcasm' before admitting I made valid points. Unless you took ample interest in his site and opinions, differing or not, he didn't seem so eager to communicate with you. I might place him among the Top 5 of most knowledgeable posters - he 'listened' to a wide spectrum of music and made it much easier to discover Fela Kuti and other African and Brazilian acts than on my own.

After talking to Dalen on slsk, I thought I'd stop by. Dalen and I have had tussels, but we at least we never made ludicrous character judgements. I'm particularly disappointed with Sketch. Here's someone I've had lunch with, swapped CDs with, and he's saying this stuff. I would have liked to have talked to you more one-on-one, Sketch, but I admit I'm not so good at engaging everyone when there's five to a dozen people, and usually just focus on those next to me. It was nothing personal, certainly no reason for you to get personal!

Shiv -- I was genuinely impressed that you had 22,000 files shared. I added you to my list thinking we could swap. I was not being sarcastic.

I also did not intentionally leave this board permanently. I stop in now and then, but haven't found anything that inspired me to post. I haven't totally given up, but it is telling that there's zero substantial discussion on Sleater-Kinney, and we're already on page three! Do you mofos wanna gossip or ya wanna talk music???!!!

Here's my two cents on Sleater-Kinney. To be fair, it doesn't come out for another month and a half, but there must be some people here who have been eager to take a sneak preview. I've always liked them for what they representated, but was always disappointed by their inconsistent albums and relatively weak sound. I'm a minority with my friends, but I didn't think they were very good live the three times I saw them. I always got the impression they didn't practice much between tours. But I read the interview in the new Magnet, where Eddie Vedder interviewed them, and the comments about the new songs got me intruiged. They went to Dave Fridmann's studio, and he told them he really didn't think any of their previous albums were any good. I think it really lit a fire under their butts, because The Woods is a monster. After ten years they finally got it together. They managed to get a heavy bottom without a bass for the first time. Janet Weiss sounds like she's using Mr. Bonham's femur bones for sticks. Corin Tucker's wail is no longer just annoying and piercing, it's frightening. It's a great, thick, unsettling, visceral album.

I normally don't post albums on my list more than a couple weeks before release date, but I felt something had to be done to alleviate the blahs, because, as the first post in this thread notes, I hadn't heard a 10- (to my ears) in a couple years.

But I did. It happens. As much as I try to be perfect, I end up failing miserably. Your strong opinions have a habit of pushing my buttons, and it seems I'm not alone in that regard. That's comforting to a degree, but I have to admit that it's ultimately my reaction.

Music is what brought me to CMJBB/Obner, but the variety of subject matter and the connections I made kept me here. I've valued the music info a great deal, but I value the friendships I've made here a lot more. If music was all we talked about, I would get bored to tears, and that's pretty much what happened at that lunch. Maybe I've held a grudge since. Like I said, I'm human.

Okay, I'll take that as an apology of sorts. If you find yourself in Chicago we can try again, but this time take more than 45 minutes and include beer. Then I'll talk about pets, dead relatives, metaphysics, girls, whatever you want.

my bad. it's just that you didn't say anything after that comment that made me think it was being sarcastic. you should've added a little winky or something. haha. unkillfiled.

this is how i feel about Sleater-Kinney. I liked them in the 90's and for what ever be the reason they seem awfuly dated to me. Some bands just don't make it out of decade, and for me Sleater Kinney is stuck in 90's.

I can't say they are stuck in the 90's because ______ but it's just a reaction I have to their music when I hear it.

If it settles anything, FnB's thoughts have me wanting to hear the new SK album, and I had kind of fallen off the wagon with them after "All Hands..."

Dude's got opinions and convictions he believes in strongly — I can dig that. I think some people just detect a smidge of pomposity and that turns them off. Take him and his site as the Ob equivalent of the know-it-all professor in college who you admired but could never really vibe with.

Music's why I came here. The fun is why I come back.

lol

yeah aside from One Beat I thoroughly enjoy all of their output. Very much looking forward to this one. I actually read in an interview with Carrie that they specifically wanted to work with someone who didn't particularly like their previous output in order to do something different..by all accounts it sounds like that's exactly what happened.

When the image freaks me out so much that I can't stop staring at it, I guess I do. Then again, your avatar gives me the creeps too.
