Ga. Evolution Dispute Embarrasses Some

 U.S. National - AP

By KRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA - First, Georgia's education chief tried to take the word "evolution" out of the state's science curriculum. Now a suburban Atlanta county is in federal court over textbook stickers that call evolution "a theory, not a fact." Some here worry that Georgia is making itself look like a bunch of rubes or, worse, discrediting its own students.

"People want to project the image that Georgia is a modern state, that we're in the 21st century. Then something like this happens," said Emory University molecular biologist Carlos Moreno.

The federal lawsuit being heard this week in Atlanta concerns whether the constitutional separation of church and state was violated when suburban Cobb County school officials placed the disclaimer stickers in high school biology texts in 2002. The stickers say evolution should be "critically considered."

Earlier this year, science teachers howled when state Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox proposed a new science curriculum that dropped the word "evolution" in favor of "changes over time."

That plan was quickly dropped, but comic Jimmy Fallon still cracked wise on "Saturday Night Live": "As a compromise, dinosaurs are now called `Jesus Horses'."

Those who support the Cobb County stickers testified this week that they are aiming for a more open-minded education for students.

"I think the (evolution) theory is atheistic. And it's all that's presented. It's an insult to their intelligence that they're only taught evolution," said Marjorie Rogers, the parent who first complained about the biology texts.

Some scientists say they are frustrated the issue is still around nearly 80 years since the Scopes Monkey Trial — the historic case heard in neighboring Tennessee over the teaching of evolution instead of the biblical story of creation.

"We're really busy. We have a lot to do. And here we are, having to go through this 19th century argument over and over again," said Sarah Pallas, who teaches biology and neuroscience at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Moreno and dozens of other science instructors, along with the county superintendent, argued that the stickers only make the state look backward. And high school teacher Wes McCoy worried the issue could tarnish his students.

"I didn't want college admission counselors thinking less of their science educations, thinking they hadn't been taught evolution or something," McCoy testified.

Moreno recalled how, after graduating from Georgia public schools, he headed north to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (news - web sites), only to find that people were less than kind about his educational roots.

"They felt Southerners were not only less well educated, but less intelligent," Moreno said.

Doughnut shop worker Maria Jordan, 48, said her Atlanta customers were shaking their heads over the latest dispute. "Lord, don't we have more important things to worry about?" she asked. "It's just a flat-out embarrassment."

As for what they are saying elsewhere around the country, she said: "Whatever Georgia's getting up north, we're putting it on ourselves."

I don't think yanks should be dissing the south as whole. But I see no problems slamming many of the idiots who live within it. Don;t be so broad in your disdain.

Yes, this is utter bullshit. It always surprises me that people car ethis much about something this stupid...that said, all you fuck the southers interact with at least 5 or 6 people on this board on a daily basis who are from 'Old South' States who are neither inbred nor unenlightened, and I for one would like everyone to contemplate that before slagging an entire region of the country. It makes you look as intolerant as those you would like to be rid of.

And lest anyone from NY want to talk some real shit, I believe your General Assembly and Governorship are controlled by Republicans, and have been for some time, whereas Georgia was completely controled by Democrats for 136 years, until this year, and Alabama is still controlled (except governorship, and that will change in 2006) by Democrats, so before you get all uppity about us, clean up your own backyard.

Also, most of the southern states went 60-40. Ahh fuck it I'm tired of this argument.

I will say that shouldn't it be Fuck the South, Midwest, most of the North, and most of the western states?

Gimmie a break. I do believe Kansas caught some flak a few years ago as well when a state official questioned evolution. This shit is everywhere.

Here is a story that makes me warm and fuzzy inside. I hope Loog and Derris have been folowing this one. I hate this Republican bitch. When I was in high school at the Governor's Honors Program she came out publicly against it saying it was not a good use of funds. Then this hypocritical bitch came down and met with all the students in attendance. I guess she wanted the money to get a facelift. HOW DID SHE EVER THINK SHE WOULD GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!!

Dozens of bogus checks in scheme
Ex-school chief Linda Schrenko accused in elaborate skimming of funds

By JAMES SALZER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 11/11/04

Prosecutors say former Georgia School Superintendent Linda Schrenko and associates employed South African and family bank accounts, envelopes full of cash and more than a hundred $590 checks in a scheme to steal more than $500,000 in federal education funds.

Schrenko, chief deputy Merle Temple Jr. and Alpharetta computer consultant A. Stephan Botes have been charged in an 18-count federal indictment with conspiracy, wire fraud and theft of public funds.

Conviction on the most serious counts could bring up to 30 years in prison, officials said.

About half the money cited in the indictment was funneled to Schrenko's failed Republican primary campaign for governor in 2002, but $9,300 went for cosmetic surgery, the government said. Schrenko had a face-lift around the time of the election.

Lawyers for the accused said their clients would be exonerated.

The criminal charges disclosed Wednesday stem from the alleged misuse of federal money earmarked for computer services at two Georgia schools for deaf children and the Governor's Honors Program.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell Vineyard called the scheme "a rather blatant theft of federal funds."'

The government says Schrenko, a Republican who served as elected school superintendent from 1995 through 2003, directed the state Education Department to issue 11 checks, ranging from $45,000 to $49,900, to companies controlled by Botes. Expenditures of $50,000 or more would have had to be approved by the state Board of Education, which often had feuded with Schrenko over politics and her handling of the agency.

The indictment does not make clear how much of the money the government suspects remained with Botes or his companies. It also does not say how the three defendants came to know each other.

A Botes company executive told the Journal-Constitution in 2002 that his company sought out Schrenko because it was developing a new educational product.

The indictment claims much of the money the company received was funneled back to Schrenko, Temple or the superintendent's election campaign through transfers from foreign bank accounts or from Botes and his companies.

In one instance, the government says, Temple met Botes and another company official for breakfast at an Atlanta hotel, and the Schrenko aide left with an envelope filled with $32,000 in cash.

More than 100 checks were cut by Botes' company for $590 each with the notation that they were to be paid for "focus group honoraria." The indictment says the checks were delivered to Temple. The checks subsequently were issued to unidentified individuals who cashed them and used a portion of the proceeds to make contributions to Schrenko's election campaign, the government says.

Shell corporations, with bank accounts, were set up to handle the federal funds flowing to Botes, the indictment says.

When a state audit began to look at the expenditures, the conspirators created backdated contracts to cover more than $500,000 in Department of Education payments made to Botes' companies, the government says.

Cathy Henson, who was chairwoman of the state Board of Education at the time, said Thursday that board members had asked auditors to look into the department's use of federal funds in November 2001, more than six months before the incidents mentioned in the indictment were alleged to have taken place.

"The audit was being conducted while she was walking in and taking out more money," Henson said.

Yeah, I remember Schrenko, and remember hating her, too. Kathy Cox (the now superintendent) was a teacher at my HS...she sucks as well.

The problem is that progressives have forgotten effective PR measures, and now have to get in screaming matches with morons (on all sides)

As with Derris, I am done talking about this. Pagoda, you goingto Aub?

Loogar, I think the derisive term "South" is now a blanket critique of those who put things like faith before reason, tie their vote for W. to religion, etc. Most of the landmass of the USA - and the Empire State is a shining example - would appear, at least on the surface, to be sympathetic to the Dobson dogma, so "South" as a geographical term is largely ineffective in this instance. Is it right that this label has crossed over in such a way? Probably not, but there it is.

I just wish these anti-evolutionists all could see Brecht's Galileo and maybe put 2 and 2 together (yes, that's 4, in Reason World). I think it's one of the great tragedies of modern US domestic history that this kind of Dark Ages style thinking is actively being embraced by such a vocal minority of the Christian faith. I grew up in the United Methodist chuch (my Dad's a minister) and we were always fortunate to be parts of congregations that valued tolerance and acceptance of others over strict interpretation. I sometimes feel like my Dad's own spiritual quest to preach an even-handed, but thought-provoking style of Christianity has failed, particularly in light of the anti-evolutionists. Big sigh...

Yeah, most of Ohio's pretty conservative, but my little democratic bubble known as Cleveland keeps me sane. Seriously, if you live near Lake Erie in Ohio and drive an hour or two south, it's like an entirely different country.

I think liberals like myself are still frustrated over the mindset of social conservatives because we literally live in two different worlds

i totally agree with kph here. having spent most of my life in "the south" that fuck the south rant makes good points but the accusations are neing thrown at the the holier-than-thou zelots. happens here in MA too. . . like in the boston archdiocese.

"the south" has it's share or wackos, but calling all southerns idoits is like calling all northerners "liberal elites". go out to the boston 'burbs and you'll find plenty of bushies.
