If you don't mind flying around the world I would go to Tioman Island in Malaysia. Nothing much there except huts on the beach, giant lizards, monkeys, jungle, a few Malaysian hippies/villagers and bar on the beach.

Isn't the point here to have a creative purge?

Some of these places are beautiful but so much so that they would be a distraction for me.

yeah, that'd be the point

it's not super important to me whether or not a space overlooks a breathtaking ravine or shoreline, but those things tend to be a bit inspirational for me on a yanni level

Funny, I thought it was quite yoni.

Latest batch of bills I can't pay have arrived. Gonna go live on the beach like the guy in Local Hero. This is Harris by the way. I've never actually made it out that far despite wanting to but I was out on Canna last summer. Interesting boat trip. Not always as calm as in the picture.

Yeah, as I said the picture is Harris, part of the Outer Hebrides along with Lewis and North and South Uist. It's a long standing desire to go out there but I've only managed Inner Hebrides although Canna is one of the furthest out Inner Hebrides and it feels quite remote. It's a strange feeling. You genuinely feel as if this few miles of rock in the North Atlantic is the whole world.

Most of the islands, especially the Outer Hebrides are very sparsely populated. There is basically nothing there except scattered farmsteads and a small port town/village.

The bigger islands of the Inner Hebrides are within sight of the mainland so you don't quite get the same feeling of remoteness. Skye and Mull are the main ones. Skye in particular is amazing with the Cuillin mountains but doesn't especially feel like an island.

The ocean currents come straight up and across the Atlantic from the Caribbean so the water looks just like pictures you see from the tropics, although it has to be said it's a bit colder by the time it gets here. Not as cold as it should be at this latitude though you'd have to be quite hardy to go for a dip!

Beaches are beautiful, the sand is literally so white it looks like snow, however again can be quite chilly with the sea breezes.

In good weather they are beautiful but in bad weather you better like paperbacks cos you'll be lucky to even get a mobile signal, never mind broadband.

about $800 for the week. i'm flying to el paso and then driving 2 hrs east to marfa. sucks to have to rent a car i won't drive for the better part of a week, but i don't want to be at the mercy of a bus schedule to get to and from the airport.

There's usually a lot of traffic from marfa to el paso... do you know anyone in the town who might do a rideshare?

I can check with some of the musicians i know.

i don't know anybody in el paso.

i wouldn't mind considering a rideshare if you know someone. i'm also thinking the lonesome road might be some good matthew mcconaughey thinking time. but let me know what you got.
