People are saying on my facebook that it is not Paul McCartney. So who is it?

Maybe Leonard Cohen?

I'd say McCartney hands down unless you're talking opera or jazz.

Aretha has lost so much range though...

In her prime, untouchable. The past fifteen years, not so much.

Considering only three months separate her and Macca, she's making an argument for dat vegan lyfstyl if you know what I mean.

Paul sounded pretty bad on Sunday, but he has sounded great very recently. Hopefully it was just an off night.

Caetano Veloso should be a strong contender.

For me, Leonard Cohen. I always hear how so and so has made a great record late in life and then I listen and almost always completely disagree. But, I've genuinely enjoyed the last 2 Leonard Cohen albums as much as any he's ever done. I think there are actually quite a few who can still sing and play and bring it live, but as far as still making solid records Cohen is the only one that has intrigued me of late. Now, if you mean best singer, like someone who can hit notes and is technical... I got no idea.

Completely disagree with this. I saw them both about five years ago. She's big, fat, can't move and just stands there and sings for about 40 minutes after which she presumably doesn't have enough energy to continue. He runs all around stage and performed for about 3 hours. The McCartney show as a whole might have been better but if judging by voice alone, she still blows him away.

I'll throw Elton John out there.

Shit his first album was late in life by rock n roll standards.

Haven't seen her in person but the videos seem rough. McCartney on the other hand, I couldn't do what he's done the two times i've seen him, not on my best day ever, and those high notes don't get easier as you get older.

On voice alone, Smokey Robinson or Mavis Staples.

Otherwise, Andre Williams.

Probably no one here has heard anything he's done in 40 years, but Eric Burdon is still bringing it live, his last few releases have been pretty fine, and his pipes are as strong as ever.

I dunno if you can complain about Aretha's range after suggesting McCartney, especially after his quavery old man version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" on the SNL thing.

Darlene Love still hits all the notes. Too bad we only get to hear her at Xmas.

I was gonna say Darlene Love. I like the Mavis call as well.

Many ways to answer - those who still approximate their pipes at their prime, or at least have experience to compensate for loss of physical capacity: Mavis Staples, Aretha, Brian Wilson, Nash and/or Crosby, Cohen (soon to be 80), Willie Nelson (83), and the point furthest on the two axes of beauty and age: Tony Bennett (88!). (And though dead for more than ten years, nothing will match Celia Cruz' power after age 70).

But in truth kids, there is one obvious answer. Zimmerman. Still inventing something disturbingly off kilter (prophecy from the outer limits).
