Actually having a truck load of lumber delivered Saturday to get started building new shelves for all of it as I've outgrown the wall of Ikea I've been using for the last 4-5 years. Should end up with around 160 linear feet of shelf space which should leave me with room to grow.

Goddamn. Post pix when done

I do have this inclination to want to own what I like.

I use Spotify (mainly at work) to test drive most albums, assuming they are even in there. Then my level of reception to those albums determines whether I splurge on a CD, a full album download, or maybe just a couple of songs. iTunes or the Music app on my iPhone are primarily how I listen to music today, but I do sometimes grab a CD from my stash on the way out the door for my car, especially if I really just want to hear an album and don't want to take the time to sync it to my iPhone.

I did recently do a purging of my CD collection where I ended up selling around 300. Now, I'm down to about 1100 or so.

As far as vinyl is concerned, I had a grand total of 10 vinyl albums up until a little over a month ago when my fiancé's sister pretty much gave me her entire vinyl collection (500+) that she didn't want anymore. A lot of good stuff in that batch, but a lot of other stuff I'll be selling (and giving her the $). I have an aunt and uncle that are also unloading their vinyl on me too in the near future. I know they have some Beatles but probably a lot of other stuff I don't care about (Chicago, Santana, etc). So far I'm not feeling the itch to personally invest in more vinyl but maybe when I finally buy speakers for my vinyl player, that will change.

Today's step 1, haul and cut wood.

Everything's now cut, loaded in and ready for assembly. Going to start framing things up tomorrow. Probably will take a couple weekends before all is done.

Well, drill batteries ran out so all done for today. Have one finished shelf and a bunch of framing ready to assemble a couple more. Here's what the finished one looks like before a sanding and a coat of poly or some such. Nothing fancy as this is for the basement, just practical, durable as heck shelving.

acquired this 8" 78rpm today, my lad's teacher brought in a box of records to school and said, "here you can have these, you like records"
so I was pretty chuffed to come across an early (1929) recording by George Clinton!

Image

I have a few 8" (and 3") Durium flexi-discs but the one I picked up today was unplayed.
They are card backed 2 track records released in the 1930's - this one came with the original flyer!

I love that Bullshot album, and switchblade in particular, nice choice. The cover of Baby Blue on there is killer too.

When you have this many records, how to you find anything? Certainly the album art is cooler, but spines sure are a pain in the ass to read, especially if tattered.

when my collection was twice as big as it is now I knew where to find all my favorites, but enjoyed the fact that there were piles and piles of records that I could browse blindly as if I were in a poorly organized store.

my collection is a living, growing thing, I am in and out of it most days and often cull if I get bored with something.
I found the best way to test where stuff is is to ask my 10 year old to point at an album spine and I have to guess it,
that works 9/10

Alphabetical ain't hard. I mean, people can find individual books in giant libraries, organizing a few thousand records isn't a huge deal.
