don't let Jeff Buckley's mom get a hold of the stuff. I am not so sure about releasing unfinished music after death...

Yeah, they only released the ones that were totally finished, and didn't need any more instruments or vocals. The only manipulation that they had to do came in the mixing process. There are a ton more tracks (the record was supposed to be a double cd) but it was wisely decided that it wouldn't leave the best mark.

I think his family did a great job, and i also love this record a lot, think it's ne of his best. but yes, jeff buckley's mom sucks

balancing what to do with a dead artists unreleased work would suck.

i mean everyone hates jeff buckley's mom for whoring out her son

laughs at tupac's mom

and hates courtney for not releasing kurdt's stuff in a timely manner...

i read in other music's review (quite some time ago) that the way this album was released (the mixes, track order, ect) was distinctly different from what elliott intended due to those the family chose to complete the record. obviously and unfortunately elliott couldn't have finished it himself, so any album they released was not going to be exactly what he imagined. however, i am curious if anyone knows if there is any truth to OM's statement. are there any friends of elliott or knowledgeable insiders lurking around?
by the way, i like this album a lot....

i read that there were a few songs that referenced his abuse by his step dad that were supposed to be great that they left off. It's creepy that this guy who abused him as a child now profits and has a voice in making decisions about his music catalog and money.

I borrowed this from someone and didn't think much of it but maybe I was just prejudiced because I really hated Figure 8. I owe it another listen if only because I love everything before Figure 8.

there was actually a really, really good article in *gasp* spin magazine a couple of months ago about his final years, his step-dad, and this album. worth seeking out.

for the record, i really love this album.

He's one of those guys that I kept buying all of his records, just because he had reached iconic status here in the NW. Right before his death, I realized the only two I really loved start to finish were XO and Either/Or.

I gave From a Basement on a Hill really close headphone listens when it came out with everything surrounding it, and never could get into it. Its not bad, but it falls into one of the "another Smith album" category for me.

Hope he's at peace now, 'cause this world was becoming too much for that dude.

i like/love the album. beautifully introspective in parts, his usual disassociativeness in parts. musically solid and often pretty. i underappreciated this on my first couple listens..

I'll admit that I haven't spent a ton of time with this. That said, I haven't really gotten into it. His songs have always been either a) breathtaking or b) meh. I find most of the songs on Basement fall into category b.

I bought it for Twilight and i'm keeping it because of Twilight. I haven't spent much time with the release.
