Before today I was a couple of weeks from finishing up my PhD. This morning while my advisor and I were going through some data, he noticed a discrepency with some of the data and long story short, about 2/3rds of my PhD is now in the toilet. So,bascially, today is probably the worst day of my life, so I thought I would ask for musical recommendations.

Sorry to hear about that. Is it your advisors fault? I recommend any Elliott Smith.

Chappaquiddick skyline will make you feel better, yet is still very much sad-day music...

I've got take responsibilty for my own mistakes, so I'll put the error at about 75% personally and the rest on my boss. It was my project and I was running it from cradle to grave, but the error occurred in an area of the project where I'm weakest. If he was a little bit more hands on, he might have picked it up earlier, but he's a fairly busy guy so the mistake just got overlooked.

I keep going through periods of intense rage and malaise, wanting to punch walls and ass and then I want to start weeping and just crawl into a corner. Then I just zone out and look at the walls.

What was so wrong with the data? Sorry you're having such a bad day, man.

Hey, thanks. The original data I acquired is fine (I assess how the brain's electrical activity respond to magnetic fields, it's similar to mobile phone exposures). The error happened during the post-processing of the EEG voltages; some of the data was getting underestimated and some was getting overestimated due to the template I was using. So my conclusions of how the brain's frequencies were responding to the fields were not accurate over my last two experiments, which roughly is about the last 2 years my life.

I seriously keep thinking this is a nightmare and I'm going to wake up soon.

Oh my god...I am so sorry, D'jack. Shit. I don't think any kind of music would make me feel better. I'd probably be in that corner crying in a fetal position.

So this isn't something where you can re-analyze the raw data - you'd have to do the experiments over again? Or is it more like, "I just wrote 200 pages based on these results, and they're all wrong"?

We're so sorry, sir,
But you did not quite make the cut this time
We'd appreciate it if you'd get
Your stuff all out by five

Don't take it personal
Everyone knows you did your best
If it makes it easier,
You should look at things from our perspective

Nah, thankfully that's the good news. The raw data is just fine, so no new experiments. But the bad news is that I will have to go through roughly 11,000 files to correct the post-processing errors.

The other downside to this Bad Day, was I was hoping to be finished the degree in time to move in February (my wife got a post-doc position in Saskatoon), so that's all blown to pieces. I'm going to have to move out west and work from the new place and commute back to finish up. The downside is that it's bloody Saskatoon and I live in Ontario.

Weak, man. What kind of files are they? Are they standardized? In other words, could this be automated at all?

I think I'd probably start with Suicidal Tendencies' first one to get some agression out, then move on to something like Hatful of Hollow.

Well, I'm meeting with my advisor tomorrow and a couple of others to see if something can't be done to speed things up. Unfortunately, there was an element of subjective judgement in the processing, so automation wasn't an option earlier. However, there may be a faint hope for doing so to correct the error this time around, but I'm not holding my breath.

We'll just wait and see how this goes. Tomorrow can only get better, you know? It just has to....
