i've lived here for about a year and a half but am not very familiar w/the area. my best pal's coming to visit in late may so i've been inspired to do some half assed research in hopes that i might discover some place interesting/nice to take her. she wants to see the bats (which i've never done before) but i'm afraid she'll be dissapointed by the amount of people/tourists present. we're both drawn to the more quiet and relatively hidden/secret places so i thought some of you might have some suggestions

Austin has the largest urban bat colony in the U.S. - they live under the Congress St. bridge. Congress is the street that dead ends at the state capitol (which, of course, since this is Texas, is larger than the US Capitol Bldg.). The bridge crosses the Colorado River about a mile south of the Capitol.

There are "some" tourists there, but, it usually isn't that crowded.

As for stuff to do in Austin, what do you like? I can give you some tips, but, depends on what you are interested in doing (food, music, bars).

If you do go to the bats, go get some coffee at Jo's (or maybe a drink at The San Jose) and then head to see the bats.

Dog & Duck Pub - 406 W 17th St

One of the finer watering holes in town. Decent selection of beers on draught and outdoor seating.

County Line BBQ - 5204 Ranch Road 2222

When in Rome, eat the 'que. One of my favorite joints to get all sloppy. Rudy's and Stubb's are comparable, but County Line and their neon pig are tip-top. Get your photo taken with the 5-ft plastic beef rib!

Barton Springs and other natural springs

I imagine it's already hotter than Hades down there, so I'd recommend you take your friend for a dip in one of Travis County's naturally-fed springs. And don't be shocked by the topless bathers at Barton Springs. There is a diving board if you feel the need to crank a can-opener for your ladyfriend.

You should never have a hard time finding live music. Pick up a Chronicle.

All I know about Austin is the Austin City Limits festival I'll be attending in September.
