Ok, corporate mags have flung these crowns around for awhile, and I thought I'd sling one of my own. Over the past 8-10 years I've seen this title bestowed to such as Radiohead and U2. At the time of each, I believed that they were somewhat deserving. Not necessarily based solely on music quality, but on overall impact. I'm flinging my crown based purely on musical quality.

I've only come to this conclusion as Gimme Fiction has sunk in over the last few weeks. Compare their body of work to either of the above, or any of the last twenty years, and you may (or may not) agree with me. All of the ingredients are there. If you dispute, gimme your fiction.

I'm not sure if I agree or disagree, because I am kind favoriteless right now, but I will say that NOTHING that I have heard of them approaches the first half of Girls Can Tell, with the possible exception of this acoustic demo of Jonathan Fisk that FT has hooked me up with.

A Series of Sneaks, though I have only heard it once, has not been the revelation I may have expected, as FT and Radcliffe both big up it pretty hard. I will give it an extended chance, but after the first part of GCT, I'm not sure anything do will live up to it.

I actually meant, if it's not Spoon, then who do you think it is.

i've never really been taken with spoon enough to listen to more than a song, but haven't i heard that their albums tend to be growers? it seems a bit premature to say that the new record is good or bad yet.

I like Gimme Fiction, but it's no Girls Can Tell.

Girls Can Tell is the only Spoon record that slightly bugs me. That said,
I've had Gimme Fiction for over a month now (thanks to a certain someone) and it ranks right up there with A Series of Sneaks & KTM.
Gimme Fiction also contains some of BDaniels's best songs to date.

That is all.

Love Spoon.
But the correct answer, for $2000, Alex is...
"Who are Super Furry Animals?"

My vote goes to Sleater-Kinney, followed by Flaming Lips and Low, but Spoon is a good choice as well.

You are the first person I ever heard say that. I guess everything didn't hit at once huh?

To each their own!

N.E.R.D. could have been the best band right now if their second album didn't suck.

Of the Spoon I own, I largely prefer Kill the Moonlight and Gimme Fiction to Telephono, A Series of Sneaks, Loveways ep, and Girls Can Tell. Not to say I don't like those other releases, but I really really really ridiculously like KTM and Gimme Fiction.

spoon songs all kinda sound the same to me. not in a bad way, but not in a prolific way at all.

I think there's an important divide within the Spoon fan contingency:

Those who came on-board with Girls Can Tell, and those that came on-board before that...

People who liked Spoon before GCT came out usually find it too "polished" or "poppy", and something about it bugs them, even though they rarely come up with one central idea that doesn't make it seem like they're nitpicking. It's like the difference between Jimmy Eat World's "Clarity" and "Bleed American" - and, yes, I believe that to be a very apt comparison....
