I like it.

Five tracks in I'm really enjoying this and I'm not even much of a NIN fan.

"beside you in time" is pretty cool.

but, on first listen(s), this seems to be a very traditional NIN record, thematically, lyrically, etc.

finishing up on my first listen and would agree. i think the opener "all in love with the world" set me up for a different type of nin, but it's still in the vain of "fragile", but more streamlined per song. maybe in "only" as well. it's tough for me to say he hasn't changed his sound much, cuz there are little differences, but not enough to stand out.

i will say he sounds less "complainy" lyrically this time around. those type of lyrics now are delivered more matter-of-fact.

still too much repetition too.

"All the love in the world" may be one of the best songs I've heard this year. That shit is just totally up my alley with the piano playing in the back throughout its entirety. I honestly haven't got too much farther than track one though. The single is good too with the synths.

as a now-grownup (somewhat) "listening to pretty hate machine in the dark at 14" NIN fan, i think the new album is pretty solid. not amazing, but a good relatively straightforward rock record with electro-noise garnish. there is a lot of cool piano stuff on it. i'm glad he didn't blow it. way to go trent with the not blowing it.
