seriously, can we just create a Gammons clone or something? why the hell do we have to put up with Kruk and Reynolds when there's so much better talent out there...? anyone have some insight here? hell, i'd rather have the ATH journalist types fielding Sportscenter questions than those 2 ABSOLUTELY VACANT fools.

also, sidebar issue: former professional athletes who go on to be commentators - which league fares the best? i'd say the NBA, based on the personality and behind-the-scenes fun of the TNT team (Chuckles, Jet...Magic on a good day), with the astute commentary provided by former Spurs Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr.

I actually don't think Kruk's that bad although I may be subconsciously cutting him some slack cause I've always loved him since his "I'm not an athlete, I'm a baseball player" line.

Reynolds is horrible though. I think Morgan is pretty bad and would be a lot worse if he wasn't paired with Jon Miller who is very good.

When you say B-ball has best, you must be forgetting Bill Walton. He may be the worst in any sport.

leiter was good...i wish he'd had more airtime somehow. everytime he spoke, it was completely straight-up, devoid of spin, and nowhere near the oddly biased pov of the Fox broadcasters.

i'd say Madden beats Walton by a half a yard, but yeah. good god, Walton...anytime i'm walking away from a telecast thinking "hey, that Bob Costas fella ain't so bad (compared to..)" something is wrong, somewhere.

and that something is Walton.

how long did his reality show go for?

Leiter is really good....

and, although I'm not a fan of Reynolds, I have to stick up for the Krukkers..when he's quipping, or doing anything spontaneous, he's a hell of a guy - I just don't think that ESPN writers are feeding him the right stuff...

He knows what he knows, and it's entertaining when he gets to speak in his own voice. Also, it's important to note the difference between play-by-play/color guys and studio hosts. More often than not, the guys actually working the games (a la Steve Caray) can actually get their own viewpoints across, wheras the studio guys are stuck. Gammons has the clout to write his own stuff (plus, being a newspaper guy, he's more used to stepping back and doing things objectively, BoSox nonwithstanding). PTI probably wouldn't work if there were 2 ex-athletes running the show...

my gf pointed out that Kruk's wardrobe person needs to be fired. He was wearing black pants with brown shoes, a white shirt and a bright yellow tie when she stopped in her tracks to explain how outraged she was about his attire.

Which basically is at the crux (ahem) of the matter for me - why put these 2 stiffs in the positions that are more ably filled by the likes of Gammons, PTI, the ATH guys, etc? I'd love to hear Kruk's off-the-cuff stuff during a broadcast over Joe Morgan and the folks deemend "old reliables" on Fox. That being said, I think Kruk epitomizes missing the forest for the trees sometimes, which drives me to starting threads like this!

Hell, I'd even like to hear color commentary from Reynolds. But maybe only for the unintentional humor value...

Also, Boston-area media: can someone explain to me the point in having Mike Felger doing anything remotely involving thinking not related to the Pats? Goodness. He's like the Bill O'Reilly of Boston sports media when it comes to arguing his points (even Ordway backs off and considers alternate viewpoints from time to time).

I don't really listen to Boston sports radio. That said, I really can't stand Dale Arnold.

Also, I don't know what actual job title Dick Vitale has but someone should really kill him.

Wow. I personally think Jon Miller is HORRIBLE. Unlistenable. His voice and delivery (and the fact that he mispronounces a lot of names) are atrocious. Joe Morgan doesn't improve the broadcast much; though he is fairly insightful. I actually enjoyed him when he worked with Costas on the old NBC baseball telecasts (that booth was good when they had Ueker as well)

I used to like Harold Reynolds, but I'm with you guys--I'm done. I'm willing to give Kruk a little more time. The worst is Jeff Brantley (sp?): His smugness makes me want to spit. Peter Gammons is on the $20 bill. Tim Kourkjan has a stupid last name. Buster Olney is....well, the name says it all. I like Carl Raviche: He keeps the show moving and delivers a highlight package with style----but not too over the top......

Leiter was good last year. David Justice was decent as well even though he has the annoying habit of repeating the same cliches over and over.

Oh, and that TNT show with Ernie, Chuck, and The Jet is the best thing going.

But, for every Kenny or Chuck, there's Tom (my head is a phallous) Tolbert or any of that other gang of stooges on ESPN's NBA package.......

Truth is I haven't watched ESPN coverage nearly as much as I used to in the past 3 years since I got Direct TV baseball ticket.

Someone should have just posted that Kruk was a monger and ended the thread a long time ago.

The one who amazes me (in a good way) is Troy Aikman. Yes, I am a Cowboys fan, but I've never really cared much for Aikman. I'm a Staubach guy...old school all the way. And when he did local commercials and even interviews here, the guy came off stiffer than Ted's head. He literally spoke like a robot devoid of any personality or emotion. So, when he joined the Fox booth for NFL games, I was beyond skeptical. But damned if he hasn't turned into the best NFL color guy going. He's still no better than my third-favorite Cowboys QB of all time, though...

I like Harold Reynolds. Guy's stuff is filthy. Kruk doesn't need to say anything, just sit there and provide various facial expressions to add to the verbal commentary. I liked Dibble, too. Didn't mind telling it like it is.

That said: Peter Notes will always reign.

I've been spoiled by having Dave Niehaus for all these years. Ron Fairly is pretty sound but Rick Rizzs, Dave Henderson, and Dave Valle can be so bad sometimes that they're actually highly entertaining.

I love my Mariners broadcasters.

the Braves telecast last night for the Hudson-Rocket game was pretty good. informative, slightly biased towards their team, but also quick to praise the play of the Astros.

maybe not the most entertaining pair in history, but good baseball talk...
