I'm approaching this truly as "favorite" and not "best," because those two aren't always the same thing to me. These are the "if you could only have one album by each of these artists, which would it be?" Here's the honest, embarassing truth:

The Beastie Boys: Check Your Head

Beck: Guero (it seems to cover just about everything he's done, and that's about all I need of Beck)

Bjork: Post or Homogenic - like 'em both the same, can't stand anything else

David Bowie: Heathen (I know I'm going to catch hell for that. Don't care.)

Fugazi: The Argument

Husker Du: New Day Rising

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus

Radiohead: OK Computer

R.E.M.: Reveal (I'm asking to catch hell again - I know most hate it, but it's the one I listen to the most. Can't help it, and I'm not going to answer Life's Rich Pageant just to score some points, good as it is. I just don't listen to it as much.)

Tom Waits: Bone Machine

Wilco: for the past year, A Ghost Is Born, before that, Summerteeth

Ween: Chocolate & Cheese. No, wait, Pure Guava. No! The Mollusk. No, Chocolate & Cheese it is.

Actually, that's kind of what I'm asking -- what would you recommend? I heard that Swordfishtrombones is one of his better ones. What's your favourite? I also know I need to hear Bone Machine, Rain Dogs, and Mule Variations. I have Alice and Blood Money, so neither of those...

Regarding Tom Waits you should also realize that his albums prior to 1983 are quite different from what he proceeded to do with Swordfishtrombones onward.

I know you're not asking me, but I'd say start with Swordfishtrombones.

Well, my personal favorite is Rain Dogs. I honestly believe it is a flawless album. Many people would obviously argue with that, though. Franks Wild Years is also really great, and I always highly recommend The Heart of Saturday Night, it's one of his earlier albums, following Closing Time (his first album). The first Waits' album I purchased was Blood Money, even though the first song I heard was off of Small Change. That one also seems to be pretty popular on the board. I have grown to like Mule Variations a lot through listening to it while painting. I listened to Black Market Baby 9 billion times this year. Also, Bone Machine is a really good album. So, If those are the ones you really would like to hear, I can upload them for you.
I also have this Tom Waits bootleg that is really amazing, it's of rare or unreleased tracks and versions of certain songs and covers, so if you like the other stuff I send you then if you'd like I can send it to you as well.
I'll get started on loading the three you mentioned you would like to hear, and I can send you Swordfish as well.
Just let me know specifically which ones you'd like. It may take me a little while to load them all but hopefully I will get a few to you by the end of the night. I'll PM you with the links. Right now i'll load up Rain Dogs and send me a message to tell me what else you'd like to hear. I have all of his albums (except for Nighthawks At The Diner, though it's on my computer). Pretty much all of his albums are wonderful, I just never got into Closing Time too much, it's nicely crafted, just not the Tom Waits I am used to.

I agree with Dri about never needing to hear either of these groups again - despite the fact I own pretty much all the albums by both groups.

X - more fun in the new world

people seem to think this album sucks but I love it. It's not my favorite but i'm glad you like it enough for it to be your favorite... I don't think there's anything that makes that album "the worst X album ever".

I just have a soft spot for that one 'cause when it came out, X was finally starting to get a little bit of attention...I think they were even on TV playing True Love on some awards show or something which struck me as truly bizarre. So, plenty of people finally had an X album and I drank a lot of drinks at parties where that one was playing. I also liked the roots influences coming more to the forefront, which started on Big Black Sun.

Unfortunately, after that one, I think things went downhill from there on out. But, with the first four albums, I could just toss a dart and pick any of 'em really.

The trilogy of Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones and Frank's Wild Years is wonderful. I'd highly recommend any of those. Swordfishtrombones is a personal favorite, buth they're all great and I couldn't say why I prefer that one without getting into a bunch of crap that would mean nothing to anyone but me. I tend to think you'd probably really dig Bone Machine. Also, you may wanna hear some of his more traditional piano and vocals kind of stuff. I really think Blue Valentine, from right before he got more experimental is great as far as his more traditional works. Into the Heart of Saturday Night is an early one that I really love.
