Yeah, when did I say people can't listen to what makes them happy? That's exactly what i'm doing with listening to Tom Waits so why don't you shut the fuck up with that side of the argument.
I'll shut the fuck up when I don't think you're being a pretentious prat. The reason I'm badgering is because your implicit and solipsistic assumption that Green Day, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and even fucking Destiny's Child are completely inferior to your beloved Tom Waits. I will defend those bands and I don't even like them. Why is Jockey Full of Bourbon objectively better than Bootylicious? Because one songs has greater emotional resonance with you? Because it inspires your art? Great, good for you if it's that "obvious", you're clearly more in touch, at 17, with what inspires you. But there's nothing wrong with the other 17 year olds out there who seriously dig Destiny's Childs or someone other pop band. If they acquire the same inspiration out of the aforementioned bands that you get out of Tom Waits, then maybe, just maybe, Green Day is "obviously" better than your muse to those people.
So you're gonna crucify the poor girl because she knows what she likes and can express her reasons why? By that same token, you should badger anyone who likes anything for any reason.
By your own admission you don't even like the bands you're defending, so I say don't defend them. Let their fans defend them. She didn't diss those bands, she's just championing an artist she's passionate about. Good on her. Not enough adults have any passions, let alone our students. What I'm trying to say is, save passionate arguments and discussion for the people who lack any passion at all.
She was just making a point about the demographic she knows best... her own. She's not invalidating anyone's music with her opinion, and I think she knows that. We need more students like this, and by playing devil's advocate, you may drive away some young people from a board like this. Just because she talks and acts like an adult doesn't mean you should berate her like an adult. She's a kid. A very bright kid, an informed kid, but still a kid, and adults sometimes forget how words can hurt a kid. Hell, sometimes we forget how our words hurt other adults.
The only reason I'm pointing this out is because i think it's a fundamental mistake that everyone of us makes every day, and it's a problem in our society and educational system.
Not that what you say isn't invalid, it is TOTALLY valid. But you and polka are on the same said, know what I mean?
And at what age is it o.k. to express an opinion? If not 17, then what... 18? 21? 65?
