What? I know i'm not saying anything stupid. This whole argument is pretty dumb though, but I will forever defend the honor of Tom Waits.

I don't care if people don't like him. I do, and he inspires me (through my art) and that's all that matters to me.

Yeah, when did I say people can't listen to what makes them happy? That's exactly what i'm doing with listening to Tom Waits so why don't you shut the fuck up with that side of the argument.

I'll shut the fuck up when I don't think you're being a pretentious prat. The reason I'm badgering is because your implicit and solipsistic assumption that Green Day, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and even fucking Destiny's Child are completely inferior to your beloved Tom Waits. I will defend those bands and I don't even like them. Why is Jockey Full of Bourbon objectively better than Bootylicious? Because one songs has greater emotional resonance with you? Because it inspires your art? Great, good for you if it's that "obvious", you're clearly more in touch, at 17, with what inspires you. But there's nothing wrong with the other 17 year olds out there who seriously dig Destiny's Childs or someone other pop band. If they acquire the same inspiration out of the aforementioned bands that you get out of Tom Waits, then maybe, just maybe, Green Day is "obviously" better than your muse to those people.

For the record, I think Green Day are great! And I'll always move my ass to "Bootylicious".

Good, i'd be glad for them if they got the same thing I get out of Tom Waits out of their favorite musicians.
I'm as in touch as I can be with my art and music and myself in general at 17, i'm so sorry I was born in 1988 but I don't think I can help that.

So you're gonna crucify the poor girl because she knows what she likes and can express her reasons why? By that same token, you should badger anyone who likes anything for any reason.

By your own admission you don't even like the bands you're defending, so I say don't defend them. Let their fans defend them. She didn't diss those bands, she's just championing an artist she's passionate about. Good on her. Not enough adults have any passions, let alone our students. What I'm trying to say is, save passionate arguments and discussion for the people who lack any passion at all.

She was just making a point about the demographic she knows best... her own. She's not invalidating anyone's music with her opinion, and I think she knows that. We need more students like this, and by playing devil's advocate, you may drive away some young people from a board like this. Just because she talks and acts like an adult doesn't mean you should berate her like an adult. She's a kid. A very bright kid, an informed kid, but still a kid, and adults sometimes forget how words can hurt a kid. Hell, sometimes we forget how our words hurt other adults.

The only reason I'm pointing this out is because i think it's a fundamental mistake that everyone of us makes every day, and it's a problem in our society and educational system.

Not that what you say isn't invalid, it is TOTALLY valid. But you and polka are on the same said, know what I mean?

And at what age is it o.k. to express an opinion? If not 17, then what... 18? 21? 65?

Accepted and point taken. My comments had nothing to do with her age (which I should have considered) as she's clearly a bright kid and her opinion is as valid as mine. I just resented the implied elitism.

I'm certainly not an elitist, I don't claim to know anything about any musicians really other than the Misfits and Tom Waits, the two artists i've considered as favorites in past years and have liked enough to learn about. I didn't mean to come off that way at all. So, sorry if I did.

Sweet. Taking pictures? Let us know how it went.

Also, are the friends you're going with fans? If they're not, I'd be very interested in their opinions.

My students are still listening to Gasolina. I don't think they're inspired to do anything other than get high and screw around...

I appreciate your comment. I wasn't trying to be an elitist or make anyone angry on the board or anything, well, I don't feel like getting into it again but I think you understood what I was trying to say earlier.

I will take pictures tonight, I thought of filming part because i'm borrowing the video camera from school to make a short film for my new 15 project series in art. Anyways, i'm not sure if they'll let me but if I do end up bringing it I can load up a video and host it somewhere for the board to watch. I'm also just not sure if I feel like carrying it around, but hopefully my pictures of Of Montreal will turn out as good (and close) as the ones I got of Xiu Xiu.

Also, I don't know who/what Gasolina is.
What level do you teach?

Oh I meant to say, MNSAA is going, we're both fans, as well as about three other people, but then the other guy who is coming is just coming for fun I think. I'm sure he'll like it, he seems pretty open minded about everything.

I'll tell you one way it matters - when I saw that you are 17, I had to go back and look at your art again. Pairing the age 17 and the art you do, that's just damned impressive. That's the kind of stuff you see people much older than you doing. I think you've got a very bright future ahead of you. Damn, I'm jealous.

You really have no idea of what that means to me. If men can admit that listening to Sigur Ros or something brings them to tears, I can tell you that just did. I'll admit i'm a stupid insecure teenager, and I can't help getting really unhappy with my art, or feeling like an amateur or like my art isn't worth making. So you have no idea of how much that means to me.
I love making art, but I get really embarrassed when I put it up online because I know people will see it and i'm afraid that my art is childish and they'll think i'm not very artistically mature. I don't know. I have all of these doubts and fears and insecurities that i'm sure surface in my art, and it's hard to overcome them. Well anyways.

I think the praise of a stranger, when it comes to art, is the most flattering praise of all. It's just nice to hear something positive from someone who has no need to lie to you to boost your confidence.

I don't know, thinking about it that way just makes it seem more realistic I guess.

I would never have guessed you were 17 judging by the way you communicate with others. You're very mature for your age. Good for you.

I suppose that just makes up for the lack of maturity I have in other aspects of my personality. Perhaps?

I wasn't trying to be elitist either, but damn i hate that gasolina song. It's the breakout reggaeton hit of the summer and i can't escape. I would mind it alot less if it inspired my kids to DO anything, or THINK anything. It just makes them try and hump each other in my classroom. I teach 6-8 general music, i've taught pre-K - 12 in orchestra, choir, general music, and electronic music composition.

I'd rather play bass.

Have fun at the show, and i'll check out those xiu xiu pics in a bit.

you're fucking 17 and the Satellite Ballrooms website changes the Of Montreal show to 18+ AFTER you've purchased tickets, and then you try and call everyone you can call (from the venue) because Of Montreals website says that its All Ages and me and about 6 other friends purchased tickets under the assumption that it was All Ages.. And then you finally get in touch with someone and it's the booking agent and he's sort of reassuring but he just tells you to call tomorrow to see what they can do. Oh they better fucking do something. I'm what, only 8 months off from being 18? Fuck my age.

Goddamnit.

Tell me it'll all be okay.
