I know there's been 300 threads on this topic...but I was just over at a DVD board I frequent, & they were going over it, too.

Anyway...there were a few links I figured I'd post for the folks here having this problem. I'm not the most avid reader of the "storage" threads, so apologies if some of these links have been posted before. I'm posting them in hopes that they haven't been, & can help someone.

http://www.spinkeeper.com/spinkeeper/muflrainblfi.html

Also...Deep Discount DVD sells some units. Right now they have a 20% off sale going ( the promo code is "SUPERSALE" ) . From what the people on the DVD board were saying, DDDVD's "Free Shipping" policy applies to things like this, too :

I've been trying to figure out how to store CDRs so they're easy to flip through, and this is the only kind of rack I've seen that could fit the bill:

[img][200:300]http://www.storeyourmedia.com/images/details/cd-456w-closeup.jpg[/img]

Anybody have any other ideas? How do you store CDRs?

Hey, thanks for posting those links. That spinkeeper one, in particular, is gorgeous.

No problem. Like I said, I didn't know if these would be fresh links or not...but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post 'em, with the frequency of posts on this topic around here.

I'm re-evaluating: I think I found a better solution (for me, anyway):

Get a Pax wardrobe frame from Ikea (US$64);
Get as many drawers as I can afford (either US$20 or US$24, depending on whether or not I "cheap out" -- the cheaper one is shallower, therefore not as perfect). Get humongomoso sliding doors (US$320-US$400).

I can also add the occasional drawered units, and/or alternate doors with curtains (Pax Lenda) if I want to "soften" my room, which I will.

When I measured them at Ikea the other day, I figured I could get about 10 drawers in one of the big frames. Internal dimensions of the drawers are approx. 21.5" x 36". 10 normal jewel cases are about 4.125" x 5" -- so one should be able to get about 7 rows of about 50 CD's == 350 CD's per drawer? I should bring in about 350 CD's and see if those drawers will hold...or perhaps I should just get one (since I need furniture anyway)...

So about 3500 capacity? Probably more if you factor in the slimline cases I have a bunch of things in. This could potentially work for me.

I did a quick search for this though on Ikea's site and couldn't figure out exactly what you were planning. More info please.

Yeah that seems a bit expensive for doors but if the total all-in cost is ~$700 and the capacity is > 3500 and it gets rid of all the hodgepodge of racks that fit 400-1000 a piece it seems like a deal.

I've also been thinking about seeing what it would cost to have something professionally custom built or just doing a paving brick and 1X4 shelf system ala diggity dawg.

I'll get back to you on this.

Basically, Ikea's Pax line is very modular. They have all these "combinations", but they're basically just frames and accessories and doors put together for you. So go to frames and "Komplement" accessories (for the drawers). I agree that the doors are relatively more expensive. Here's what I plan to do: get one Pax Lenda curtain rod (US$4), throw out short rod, get a "real" long one, and just hang curtains in front of them.

You don't need the doors at all, they have several wardrobes that are open, and they look fine. They also provide for flat surfaces of alternating depth, if you want to do that to your room to modify the acoustics. Those huge sliding doors (cover about three units side-by-side) are on the order of US$500!

I was actually just there today -- that Alleby 576 thing is on sale (from US$45 to US$40) starting today. I got two -- these will be my frequent rotation stacks (geddit?). I may get two more once I put these two together if there are any left. Since they spin, depending how much room they need between 'em, they might take up a pretty fine footprint.

I'll provide direct links to the frame and drawers later.

Okay, go to this page, but then switch the size to 40x23x80 (approx. -- I believe it's the 2nd to last option). You can use the 93 heigth if you have 8' ceilings, but I just don't see the point -- there's no way you're going to be able to look in those top two drawers without a ladder. I'm putting boxes on top of mine. On the plus side, if you do have a way of getting to those top locations, the cost of the two different size frames are the same. If you want to be able to close them off, then get the larger frame (if you can).

Then go to this page for the drawers. You can even buy them one at a time, but you got to hope they don't phase them out like they did that color to that guy who was buying the Billy stuff.

I counted like 10 drawers could go in the tall one, so I'm guessing 8 can go in the shorter one. Possibly 7. EDIT: <-- These numbers are wrong according to the planner, below. But it might not be allowing for space, so I could be right. Or I could have just plain lost count.

Guess what? You're done. That's it. You don't have to do any more. Me, I'm going to "garnish" it with this, only what they're not showing is that the curtain rod is sold separately, and for only US$4, so I'll just get that, and perhaps some similarly thick fabric, but black or purple or blurple or something that complements my room (white is not the new black). I don't need to get it for every one, I can get it for every other one or something.

Also, if I get tired of loading nothing but CD's in these contraptions, I can get some of these drawers (see bottom of left part of combination). Then what I would do is not let the curtain hang all the way down on those units.

Some additional links:

Pax Planning Tool

I just did the calculations, and one short unit + 11 drawers == US$352
Tall unit + 13 drawers + curtain front == US$408

Here is the top level Pax page. Look specifically at this combination:

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... 5855*15857

Image

EDIT: Don't know why the link isn't working.

The doors are transparent, those bottom four things are the drawers I have in mind.

Let me know if any of this makes any sense, or if you have any questions. I'm rearranging my room to accomodate this setup.

Peter,

Did you end up doing that Pax System?

If so, how many drawers/cds were you able to fit?

i just bought a 300 gig external hard drive. i've spent the last year (on and off) ripping my entire collection of music into vbr .mp3. my digital collection sits at just over 3000 albums.

my computer came with windows xp media edition and a remote control.

Accept for newer cd(or trophy albums) which sit in one half of an ikea wall unit that i bought at ikea (the other half of the unit holds dvds), are in boxes in my closets and basement.

i was at ikea last weekend and picked up 4 benno towers. they were precisely what i was looking for - about 8" wide and 79.5" tall. they each hold 180 cds. i needed to get shelves in two very small spaces, so i was going for a tall look. and they're tremendous. i really like them a lot. and they were only $39.99

Does it offer good protection?

"Protection" only in the most minimal sense of the word - protection from the sun, sure; protection from wind and rain, sure; protection from dust, sure. Protection from friction and pressure? No way. Storing these books in the most delicate way possible is the only way you can use them. If you use them to transport discs, kiss some of them goodbye.

Seriously, these books were the single worst thing to happen to my CD collection. I'm pretty careful with my discs, but after a short time in these books, many discs were rendered useless because they'd actually worn through the top coating. Discs are face-to-face in these things and have no protection on part of them, so they just rub against each other. Unless you can find sleeves that cover the entire disc, front and back, I would highly suggest not going this route.

I bet the RIAA invented those binder cases so discs get scratched and you have to buy replacements.

Brilliant.

I could not justify spending $160 to store 720 cd's.

i don't even have 500 cds, so this will last me for years. my record collection's what gets the special storage treatment. and that's been done for a year now.

I have 1100, so I would need to spend a lot more money. I do like the Benno towers though, but need something bigger. I got something similar, but about 3 times as wide at value city for $40. I need to get another one and then I am set.

Not yet, but it's all planned out. I asked everyone to get me an Ikea gift certificate for Xmas...so of course only one person listened.

I doubt I will in the next month, either. Sorry.
