What I don't like in any comedian is the social commentary. I ahte it when you listen to a comedian and they talk about how stupid world leaders are, or greedy business ceo's are, or talk about what a fucked up world we live in because so and so doesn't view the world the way they do.
I hate the comic preaching. I understand that they have a mic and are paid to talk, but like whoever said before...I am there to laugh not be forced into an extremely subjective view of the world.
This is why I like Hedburg so much. I just heard some Steve Wright and really enjoy him as well. They take the time to deal with making things funny with using the english language and talk about nothing major. They don't break out into a rant on contemporary politcal and religious commentary which is only made "funny" because they use extremely inflammatory language and say weird stuff like, I would rather have 3 monkeys shit in my mouth than live in a place where so-and-so is running the place. It's something anyone can do. It's just complaining. They just get paid for it. This is why I get unbelievably tired of people like Dennis Miller, but that's also because he tries too hard in making metaphors/similies and becomes borderline incoherent. And it is also why I am growing to really dislike Lewis Black. It's just less and less funny. Unless I want to hear someone cuss incessantly and complain about how they are not in charge of the world.
What makes this all the worse is the ridiculous audiences that clap and cheer in a "Preach it", "Amen", "Hallelujah" sort of way. It only encourages them to continue in vomiting things out that are just plain stupid.
The best commentary Ive heard on this subject.
I totally agree with you, after having XM Radio for one week and listening to the comedy stuff more than anything else. The comics play to their respective audience much more than they would ever admit. This bothers me more than anything, and is why most of what Janeane Garafolo says drives me to drink.
However, David Cross is articulate and funny. He is also very good as a comedic character actor.
