No, I think DC articulated quite well why I dislike Larry the Cable Guy. I think a comic said it best when they said, "I can't respect anyone who thinks the letter 'R' is a word."

I still listen to and love David Cross's comedy albums on Sub Pop. I was never a fan of Mr. Show, but his appearances on Just Shoot Me and Arrested Development are fun.

I'll try and find the time to read this letter, but I honestly never saw Larry the Cable Guy's act before.

hedberg is unoriginal solely because of Steven Wright/Emo, right?

Emo was awesome.

He can say it all he wants, but Fox and MTV qualify for mainstream in my book. I know that's not the same as stand-up, but he doesn't seem to avoid seeking the limelight either.

Partly, and partly because his style tends to run out of material pretty easily. I enjoy his stuff, it makes me laugh, but I don't ga-ga over it.

I am ashamed that I live in the same state as Larry the Cable Guy and that he sells out the arena I work at everytime he does a show here, which is about once a year.
He rapes his audience through shitty merchandise. He and most of his Blue Collar Comedy associates haven't changed their routines for years now. They tell the same jokes every freaking time and the audience eats up the same shit like they heard it for the first time.
I don't think David Cross is that funny as a comedian, but he is a pretty funny guy as an actor and I basically agree with all he said in this letter.
I also agree that Cross is lowering himself to Larry's level, but when someone disses you publicly, sometimes you got to get in the mud with them. Cross is probably jealous, but you can't blame he or any other slightly more intellectual comedian for ripping on what they deem to be a lame act that revolves around dumbed down and often overly racist jokes.

"Rapes" his audience? Please explain. Do they have Blue Collar French Ticklers?

The last time he did a show here he was charging and absurd amount of money for his crap. His t-shirts looked like he had them made at a local screen printer who makes lame novelty shirts. It is just shitty merchandise being sold at an exorbitant rate to a bunch of middle class morons. I just can't see how he can defend his audience about being dumb, when he is clearly scamming them due their ignorance.

David Cross dissing on LTCG is like Sufjan Stevens dissing on Toby Keith. They're just so massively different that there's no point in one trying to relate to the other.

That's comedy!

David Cross isn't intellectual... he's just frustrated.

I like Jon Stewart and Stephen Corbert much more.

It was Moooooney!

I like Cross, but he can get on my nerves sometimes. I would never sit down and listen to one of his comedy albums.

One guy that hasn't been mentioned that I think is funny is Bill Maher. Mainly on his show, but his stand-up is good too.

are you for serious? that was easily, without a doubt, the most pathetic attempt at topical humor i've ever had the misfortune to witness. when it was on after the tds it was like the most manic depressive comedy hour--a vast ocean of suck to balance out the hilarity that is the daily show.

Moreso for the interplay between guests. Four guys hanging around ribbing each other, not the political insight. I'll also admit I wasn't a frequent watcher. My TV is off 90% of the time during the week.

I also think the Daily Show ain't nothin' special, despite all the Jon Stewart hero worship. TDS is essentially "Weekly Reader" for people who can't find The Washington Post on the newsstand.

What I don't like in any comedian is the social commentary. I ahte it when you listen to a comedian and they talk about how stupid world leaders are, or greedy business ceo's are, or talk about what a fucked up world we live in because so and so doesn't view the world the way they do.

I hate the comic preaching. I understand that they have a mic and are paid to talk, but like whoever said before...I am there to laugh not be forced into an extremely subjective view of the world.

This is why I like Hedburg so much. I just heard some Steve Wright and really enjoy him as well. They take the time to deal with making things funny with using the english language and talk about nothing major. They don't break out into a rant on contemporary politcal and religious commentary which is only made "funny" because they use extremely inflammatory language and say weird stuff like, I would rather have 3 monkeys shit in my mouth than live in a place where so-and-so is running the place. It's something anyone can do. It's just complaining. They just get paid for it. This is why I get unbelievably tired of people like Dennis Miller, but that's also because he tries too hard in making metaphors/similies and becomes borderline incoherent. And it is also why I am growing to really dislike Lewis Black. It's just less and less funny. Unless I want to hear someone cuss incessantly and complain about how they are not in charge of the world.

What makes this all the worse is the ridiculous audiences that clap and cheer in a "Preach it", "Amen", "Hallelujah" sort of way. It only encourages them to continue in vomiting things out that are just plain stupid.

The best commentary Ive heard on this subject.

I totally agree with you, after having XM Radio for one week and listening to the comedy stuff more than anything else. The comics play to their respective audience much more than they would ever admit. This bothers me more than anything, and is why most of what Janeane Garafolo says drives me to drink.

However, David Cross is articulate and funny. He is also very good as a comedic character actor.
