today's selection is from the amazing ms. irma thomas, the soul queen of new orleans. the rolling stones liked her (enough to completely jack "time is on my side") and so should you. in this beautifully produced 1967 ballad, irma begs for a one night stand and sounds sad, vulnerable and sexy as hell. lady's got a serious voice, so much so that whatever crappy microphones they're using can't even contain it. download, enjoy, and weep uncontrollably:

irma thomas - yours until tomorrow

great singer. her "wish someone would care" is a favorite of mine. unfortunately, i got into her about the same time as doris duke (i'm a loser) and i haven't dug too much into irma thomas' discography because i became obsessed with doris duke soon after.

I'm a big fan.

Did you see this comp just came out:

A lesser-known side of Irma Thomas' career -- especially when compared to her legendary soul recordings of the 60s -- but a package that showcases a whole new range of her talents! The tracks on this set are pulled from a variety of 70s recordings done by Irma for labels that include Fungus, Canyon, RCS, and Roker -- and most are in a deeper soul mode than before, with rootsy touches that move past the more polished backgrounds of Thomas' work in the 60s -- really emphasizing the harder sound of her excellent vocals. Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams produced a good number of tunes in the collection, but all are taken straight, soulful, and southern -- with none of the gimmicks of his own work, and a good earthy approach that's similar to Williams' contemporaneous productions for Doris Duke. 19 tracks in all, with full notes on this stretch of Irma's career -- and a set list that includes "In Between Tears", "She'll Never Be Your Wife", "These Four Walls", "You're The Dog", "Turn My World Around", "I'm So In Love", "A Woman Left Lonely", "Zero Willpower", "Safe With Me", "Looking Back", and "We Won't Be In Your Way Anymore".

I almost picked it up yesterday. I'm sure I'll end up buying it soon.

She played at a Mardi Gras breakfast I went to. It was kind of a weird setup being it was at 6:00 AM at the Ramada Inn conference room in Houma, LA. Irma gave it her all though and it was still enjoyable.

Your brother and third hour in general say thanks for the Irma Druu. She is something special. I better stop typing and listen to the lame presentation on the birth of Communism now...

i haven't heard any of those tracks, but i definitely likes me some swamp dogg, i had no idea they had ever worked together. she also did some early work with allen toussaint--she sure knows how to pick her producers.

and brown, glad your third hour has so much soul.

Irma and others like Toussaint are on a new comp of new material produced by Joe Henry - along the lines of his work with Soloman Burke. It looks to be fabulous.
