today's selection is from the amazing ms. irma thomas, the soul queen of new orleans. the rolling stones liked her (enough to completely jack "time is on my side") and so should you. in this beautifully produced 1967 ballad, irma begs for a one night stand and sounds sad, vulnerable and sexy as hell. lady's got a serious voice, so much so that whatever crappy microphones they're using can't even contain it. download, enjoy, and weep uncontrollably:

great singer. her "wish someone would care" is a favorite of mine. unfortunately, i got into her about the same time as doris duke (i'm a loser) and i haven't dug too much into irma thomas' discography because i became obsessed with doris duke soon after.

She played at a Mardi Gras breakfast I went to. It was kind of a weird setup being it was at 6:00 AM at the Ramada Inn conference room in Houma, LA. Irma gave it her all though and it was still enjoyable.

i haven't heard any of those tracks, but i definitely likes me some swamp dogg, i had no idea they had ever worked together. she also did some early work with allen toussaint--she sure knows how to pick her producers.

Irma and others like Toussaint are on a new comp of new material produced by Joe Henry - along the lines of his work with Soloman Burke. It looks to be fabulous.
