i think i made the face that Spielberg made when he did the trilogy joke. It was funny, but my impulse reaction was "oof."

and when i said he was the same last night as he was on his show, i meant his comfort level. Obviously his jokes weren't as political.

i thought he did great. it was nice to have somebody up there with a sense of perspective about the whole affair--i'm sick to death of hosts that buy into the idea that these awards shows are monumental events. the last thing a room full of ego trippin celebrities needs is a ball-cupping lackey who makes them feel even more important.
and fuck billy crystal. i would imagine most people don't want to see another schlocky song-and-dance routine taking incredibly safe jabs at the best picture nominees (and i'm sure i don't.) stewart took a lot of the jazz-hands showbiz out of the oscars, and it's about damn time.

I mean seriously, did you really expect him to spit out some off color jokes about abortion and wiretapping?

It's the OSCARS. Not the Daily Show. It's network, not cable. It's always safe and it's always either so-so or garbage. That's just the way it is. To expect ANYTHING else is just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

He acted a certain way on Crossfire and acted a totally different way as the host of the Oscars, totally. But what did you want him to do, call someone a dick as he introduced them?

Oh, and anyone that would choose Billy Crystal over him needs a severe case of cancer.

Busty,
All of this right here is dead on. I always thought Crystal did a good job, but I never understood why so many people consider him to be the personification of an Oscar host. I think it is cool to see someone who will never have a 20 million dollar movie contract or any real chance of winning an award host the event. It is like having Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell present an award they probably won't ever get nominated for.

If Stewart would have been as off color as he is on his show, most people who normally watch the Oscars would be offended. I don't think he wanted to end up like Letterman nor should he have to emulated Crystal.

i am not expecting some kind of a summit, no. however...

the hosts you guys are mentioning from previous years, i haven't seen very much of, but billy crystal, steve martin, and johnny carson are comdeians who do a broad range of work. jon stewart is there because of his left-leaning political humor. period. as a stand-up comic, i don't think too much of him. as a matter of fact, when i was in college he came to do his act, and less than 20 people showed up to see him, i shit you not.

that being the case, i absolutely do think it's appropriate to include that kind of humor at that ridiculous award show. why isn't it? why is it out of bounds to joke about real issues? it's a goddamn ceremory to heap accolades on people who are very well compensaed with both cash and recognision for their jobs. what's the difference if it offends some dipshit somewhere? it is also honoring a number of films that are offensive to people who don't agree with jon stewart's politics anyway.

to my mind, jon stewart is a pussy who preaches to the choir, but look how tame he is when there are people who don't already agree with him listening in. he is a company boy. i don't really care one way or the other, but let's not all pretend that we were entertained in any way by that lame telecast.

It seemed that way at first, but I think he found a groove 1/3 of the way into the show. His quips and adlibs were pretty great and spot-on most of the time. How can you deny his "montage about montages" comment or his reaction to Three 6 Mafia? He had several more moments just as good.

Yeah - the opening was stilted and not great. The asides made up for it.

Dude do you have any idea how TV/advertising works? It's that "dipshit somewhere" that controls EVERYTHING; not only on television but in most everything else.

I'm not pretending. I promise I really was entertained. Was it the best thing I've ever seen on TV? Probably not. Did I laugh? Yes.

Stewart was decent, but should have done better, given his comedic pedigree. I still think Letterman got a raw deal.

Funniest thing last night: The NTAC in the green unitard. Funniest thing he's done in at least five years.

I never thought Jon Stewart was funny until the Daily Show. In fact when he got the gig, my roommate and I were like, "well that show is done because he ain't funny." I was very pleasantly surprised with show since he took it over.

I thought overall he did pretty good last night. His bread and butter is quip remarks. That's it. I find when strays from that on the Daily Show, it doesn't work as well. When he did that last night, he was good. Otherwise he was just okay. I certainly don't want a whole bunch of politics from an award show host either. He was there to entertain the masses. Not make a statement.

I thought the funniest thing in the show was when he dissed the Baldwin brothers. After introducing Luke and Owen Wilson as two talented brothers, he said "Come to think of it, that describes the Baldwin Brothers as well"

It's clear that thrillhouse has, indeed, never watched the Oscars if he's claiming Stewart was towing the company line. He was, by far, the furthest from a kiss-ass as has hosted this show in years---Crystal fits that description perfectly. I seriously doubt that JS was worrying about being invited back for next year.

My favorite moment was his jab at Scientology.

Jon Stewart was funny way before the Daily Show. I thought his brief-lived MTV show was funny, and his stand up stuff was really good.
