That's pretty amazing. I expect scientists to find The Loch Ness monster any day now...

Does anyone remember that little green thing they found on the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic last year?

It looked like a green Q-Bert.

Wasn't it New Guinea?

I thought they found the "Hobbits" in Indo.

I found it. Obners, I give you The Almiqui:

Image

Once believed extinct, the Almiqui resurfaces in Cuba

Wed - September 24, 2003

A farmer in Holguin province recently discovered an almiqui, a worm-eating, nocturnal creature recently believed to be extinct. The almiqui was last sighted in 1999 and before that in 1977. It's presence in eastern Cuba was first noted by naturalists in the 19th century and since then has been seen only a handful of times. The almiqui was a victim of development - - the deforestation of Cuba - - and the importation of alien species to the largest island in the Caribeann, especially dogs. Good news for Cuba . . . proving that socialism can actually work to preserve extinct species - - animal and human.

This critter is probably too damned ugly to survive much longer . . .

Actually what we really need is a thread about extinct animals, like 80's hair metal favorites White Lion.

Still rumored to exist: The Tasmanian Tiger

Image

Image

The Thylacine is a member of the most remarkable group of mammals found in Australia. (Names such as marsupial wolf, marsupial dog, zebra dog, Tasmanian tiger, and Tasmanian wolf reflect this analogy.) This applies primarily to the shape of the head - especially the morphology of the skull - and the elongated body with its long tail. The animal's body structure and position of the legs are also rather congruous with that of a placental wolf, though the thylacine's legs are proportionately shorter. The feet bear blunt, non retractile claws. The Tasmanian Wolf was not a wolf nor a tiger. It was a marsupial, related to kangaroos.

Early European settlers in Tasmania are the originators of names such as marsupial wolf, pouched wolf, and native wolf. In recent times, the name thylacine has come into more popular use, deriving from the animal's scientific nomenclature. In older literature, one sometimes encounters names such as "opossum hyena", "native hyena" and "zebra opossum". The names Tasmanian tiger and native tiger are still in popular use up to this day. These are likely the oldest names, as even the Dutch helmsman Jacobszoon (who explored Tasmania in 1624) made mention of the footprints of a "tyger". Further descriptions of the Tasmanian "tiger" are found in the ship logs of the Dutch East India Company, and the convicts of the penal colony created in 1803 at Derwent River were familiar with the "native tiger".

The length of the body, from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail, ranges between 4 ft - 6.5 ft., of which about a third (15 - 26 in.) is the tail. On average, males are somewhat larger than females. Measurements taken of 18 skeletons largely support these figures. Shoulder height is 14 - 24 in., but the highest point of the body is over the pelvis. When running, the hind limbs are arched at various angles, especially at the ankle. A body weight of 33 to 66 lb (15-30 kg) is estimated. When running, the tail swings about rather stiffly. The thylacine's 13 - 19 dark traverse stripes contrast markedly with the light grey to yellow brown coat color.

No living Thylacine has been seen for many years but, in August of 1961 it was reported that there was evidence to suggest that an animal which entered a trap on the west coast of Tasmania was in fact a Thylacine. It managed to escape, but left behind blood and hair that could later be identified.

No, I'm not tired of this yet.

THE OKAPI

Image

Image

British explorer named Sir Henry Johnston discovered the Okapi in 1901.

The Okapi was first sent to zoos in 1920 and has adapted quite well. They
can now be found in captivity around the world, though they are rare in the
wild. Scientists believe they are the closest living relative of the giraffe.

The wild okapi live in the rainforest of Zaire in Africa. They are very shy and
they like to live alone. There are less than 100 okapi living in zoos today.

The okapi's tongue can even reach into its ears to clean them.

THE TAMWORTH PIG

Image

The Tamworth Pig is a ginger colored pig which originally came from the
Midlands. It is the only red native breed to be found throughout the British
Isles and is thought to be directly descended from the old English forest
pig. Tamworths enjoy living outside despite the weather, which encourages
healthy, happy pigs.

This breed is considered as a bacon producer but, its pork has a very full
flavor, high eating qualities and superb crackling.

This breed is still on the endangered list of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

THE SUMATRAN RABBIT

Image

The Sumatran rabbit is known only from the mountains of Sumatra. No living example has been
seen or studied by scientists since 1930 and only a very few specimens have ever been collected.
The species was believed to be monotypic (only one species in the genus) until very recently
when a similar rabbit was discovered in the rainforests along the Annamite Mountains of Laos and
Vietnam. The Sumatran rabbit exhibits some very unrabbit-like behavior, being rare, shy and slow-
moving. It also lives in rainforest, which is why it has evolved to have small ears and a beautifully
patterned coat. The first ever photographs of the Sumatran rabbit in the wild were made in November
1997 by an automatic camera set in the forest around Danau Tujuh. Until recently this species was
believed to live only on volcanoes at high altitude. This photo, taken in hill forest proves that the
rabbit has a broader habitat range than just volcanic peaks. Critically Endangered. One confirmed
sighting in 1972. Last collected in 1916. Presumed extinct until photographed in 1997.

THE TAKAHE

Image

The takahe is only found in New Zealand. It is an endangered species. The takahe became big and
flightless and slow breeding in New Zealand. They have lived to be over 20 years old in captivity.
Their wings are not used for flying, but are used during courtship and to show aggression. Takahe
now only live in the wild in the Murchison and Stuart Mountains in Fiordland National Park. Small
numbers of takahe have been relocated to four offshore islands - Maud, Mana, Kapiti and Tiritiri
Matangi.
