none of them existed anyways. Some dude probably just took a bunch of papyrus and brewed coffee with it then wrote all that shit. Instant parchment. Same shit probably happened with the other 4.

Yeah, and it never ceases to amaze me how so many people's complete ignorance about Christianity never stops them from taking a stance of intellectual superiority on the subject.

See...and your ignorance about how other people may have arrived at their beliefs or non-beliefs amazes me.....I was a church-goer for many years and have had many religious studies classes - but I'm pretty much an aethiest now. Nothing adds up to me....too many holes...and I really arrived at the point where I couldn't help but see most religion as a man-made invention created to control people.

Shut up, dude. You're just flying off on some assumption that my post is saying that no one knows enough to be critical of Christianity. I, too, was raised in church and have read a decent amount on the subject. I fully understand someone being disillusioned, disgusted, whatever, with Christianity as it is taught, presented, and practiced in our society as well as the many apparent contradictions, inconsistencies, injustices, etc. in The Bible. That's not what I was talking about, but I'm glad my ignorance "amazes" you.

I was responding to the posts that started off this thread which were in effect "OMG, this new hard evidence has just surfaced, and it totally changes everything!!!"

That what I thought you were responding to, but it's funnier to have the thread get all pissy.

He was. I sold it to him.

The Council of Nicea, knowing that there was prolliferation of scriptures and sects all claiming primacy and purity in bearing the true belief, and knowing that with Constantine's assumption of Chrisitanity as a system of belief informing the moral skelton of the decaying Empire, was designed to codify the canon, decide which of several scriptures was the true record, and create an authority and orthodoxy that would be a power that the state used and controled. Isotropism and hegemonic determinism, and maybe crack too.

Religion is man's use of limited language and culture-bound rationalization to talk about, understand, and live the Mysteries of God, creation, life and death. One river, many wells.

That man's imperfections make for quirky inconsistencies, hypocritical power plays, and established chruches bent on perpetuating structuures of domination, does not mean that there is not Something with mysterious attributes of life-death, joy, return and redemption.

Nice thread to enter Holy Week.
