Governor Heinemann beat former Husker Football Coach Tom Osborne by 7pts in the GOP Primary for Governor. It was Osborne's first and most likely last defeat/political race.
Also of note, Shane Osborn, the guy from my hometown that gained national fame for landing that damaged spy plane in China, won the GOP nomination for State Treasurer. He has absolutely no political experience and job experience, but crushed the incumbent due to his notoriety.

Apparently Heineman had some strategy wherein he would not criticize Osborne, just highlight his own positive developments for the State.

I really wonder if there is any polling to show that this was actually a result of dissatisfaction with Congress?

I think the incumbent rule held true. Most people thought Osborne should have stayed in Congress if he wanted to hold an elected office. Nebraska is far too conservative for congressional dissatisfaction to have an impact.

Now the big race is Pete Ricketts, former Ameritrade exec who spent 5 million to win the GOP Senate nod against Ben Nelson, the most conservative Democratic Senator with the highest approval rating currently on Capitol Hill.

Yeah I heard that Ricketts race compared to Hagel v. Nelson, but that Ricketts doesn't have Vietnam service to highlight.

Should be interesting. I like Ben Nelson, btw.
