Here's my story- yesterday, I ride my bike to the post office to mail 2 letters. What a surprise, the stamp machine is out of order. Grrr. I walk into the room where maybe 10-15 people are waiting in line. I single out a guy straight ahead and approach him. "Excuse me, would you mind mailing these for me? The machine is out of order." I set the letters and 80 cents in change for 2 stamps on the counter in front of him.
He stares at what I've put in front of him, uncomprehending. "What?"
I can see he's a little slow. He's trying to figure out if I gave him enough money.
I repeat, "Would you mind mailing these for me? The stamp machine's out of order. Here's the money, and you can keep the change," I try to joke with him.
"Wait in line."
"What?" I ask incredulously.
"Yeah, wait in line like the rest of us."
I stare at him. Now, I'm the one uncomprehending. "I can't believe it," I say, loud enough for the whole room to hear. I repeat it as I walk out. No one offers to mail the letters for me, and as I'm a little worried about my unlocked bike, I don't stick around.
If I had driven my car, I think I might have gotten in the guy's face, and that wouldn't have been a good idea.
