These guys trip the same wire for me that Lenny Kravitz hit with that first mega album in '93 or whenever... so over-the-top derivative that I cannot in good conscience enjoy them. Lenny took Hendrix and Zeppelin riffs and called them his own. Jet more or less overdubbed new vocals onto Iggy Pop. But nobody tops the all-time king is this shit: fucking TRAIN.

I hate Jet but I think this is a fucking disgrace. I gave up on PFM long ago but I really didn't think they'd ever sink this low. This is frat-boy prank mentality.

Furthermore, why even bother to review something like Jet? Why waste the space? There's plenty of actual good music going on out there, so why not use the time and space to promote something they do like? They didn't "review" Jet because they wanted to steer people away from it, they did so because they have the mentality of 13 year olds and wanted to do something that would make them giggle like 13 year olds. What a waste - this just proves that they aren't out to critique music to help music fans but to pump up their own egos as bad writers. Good writers don't need to engage in this kind of infantile behavior.

Oh, geez, lighten up. It was a dumb joke, but what the hell. They've never been a 100% serious, professional music criticism site. Haven't you read any of their old "skit" reviews?

Why even waste the energy caring about this? Either laugh at it or don't. I didn't, honestly, but I'm hardly upset that their fifth review of the day, tucked away at the bottom of the pile, was a silly "frat-boy" joke.

Of course I've seen their skit reviews - skits, jokes, stories, now this video. That's exactly why I've stopped reading PFM. They don't do anything seriously, yet people read them and take their "criticism" very seriously. They're a fucking travesty. If this was a one-off instance, it would be funny - but this is just another in a long line of things where they go "Oh, we're above this." They're above everything. They're a bunch of disgusting, snotty little snobs - yet they're ironically pandering to the lowest common denominator with "reviews" like this.

Can you try to stop overreacting for a minute? Music critics were a bunch of "disgusting, snotty little snobs" long before Pitchfork ever existed. Their tastes have wavered arbitrarily with trends, and they've all adopted revisionist histories (RE: Led Zeppelin, for instance).

You take the good with the bad, and it's easy enough to filter through. Pitchfork has a few good writers, some sub-mediocre ones, and then some unfuriating, though occassionally insightful-despite-themselves Nick Sylvester-type jerk-offs. You can generally see one of their more gimmicky, narcissistic reviews coming from a mile away, and it's generally equally evident when one of them is going to be well thought out and worthwhile right from the opening paragraph.

I didn't mind that big single of theirs. That other song they had, the ballad (forgot what it's called) was kind of boring.

I've never seen the vid of the monkey sipping his piss before, so that's the primary reason I laughed. At first, I thought I was being linked to a Jet vid for a single on Pitchfork....

Why does everyone give "Lust for Life" a free pass? Iggy and Bowie stole that bass line just as blatantly as Jet, but somehow that's okay.

Exactly. Bringing a little bit of the rock to people other than the usualy wankers who extol teh virtues of whatever band Clell Tickle tells them to, is a cardinal sin.

I don't love Jet, but I promise that if I played Get Born at a party with everyone here, 64% of them would, halfway through, as "Who is this band? It sounds pretty good."

I'm with Bloor, they are harmless and not worth such an uproar. I don't personally listen to commercial rock radio anymore, so a band like Jet doesn't really impact me in anyway. I choose to ignore them, but I'd never go on a tangent about how much they suck.
I had basically forgotten them after their hugely successful slow song, but I much rather have a band like them play the arena I work than the upcoming Disturbed and Godsmack shows we have in the next month or two.

Wait, Pitchfork didn't give the album a rating, so there's really no way to tell just how much they like the album.

A few things. I'm definitely not a Jet fan, though that third single from their first album I did enjoy. Stern broke the guy down in late '04/early '05 about how it is about his father. A priceless interview, btw. Stern talked to this kid, who just got married, and really nailed what that song was about. Lead singer went into defensive mode about it. Great radio, but they take themselves way too seriously. I think it is that solipsistic sense of entitlement that I have a problem with. Again, I did like that piano-driven song. Help me Obs on the title. I think it was their lack of humor that turned me off. I'm sure there will be major backlash about how I should just listen to the music on it's merits, but sometimes a band's personality can sour me on them. For instance, not that I ever wanted to get into the Darkness, but they were on Loveline a couple years back, and the moment they realized this show was about damaged teenagers, they freaked. They thought the show was gonna be some Darkness circle jerk, and when that wasn't the case, they walked out on Drew and Adam. Priceless stuff to listen to Adam goof on them the rest of the show. Anyway, back to P4K, I loved their interview with TVotR, but that Silversun Pickups review, 5.0, was a joke. First off that chick is not cute, ADJUST YOUR MONITOR. Look, I reflexively think all chicks in bands are hot, but this girl has a third degree case of the uglies. Take Kissing Families and All the Go Inbetweens from Pikul and replace the two weakest tracks from Carnavas and we are talking classic album. I love how P4K will bash any album they don't have an early review for. What are they gonna say about Dog Problems, for instance, once they get around to reviewing it? Already this year they have shit-canned Sound Team and Birdmonster long after blogs were touting them. And they never seem to have much praise for British acts either (aside from Bloc Party). If they don't have the first word on a band they are hell bent on having the last. Having said that, I've been an avid follower of their site since '99. Ryan likes to say there is no cohesive Pitchfork agenda (the writers are free to say what they want, blah, blah, blah) but there is definitely favortism and on the other side of the coin, derision, for certain bands that is nothing short of calculated. (Hold Steady, we suck your collective cocks, 'cuz you are originally from the Minnesota area). Claims of objectivity are ludicrous. Discuss.

that's because Pitchfork sucks.

no one needs them anymore imo, because you can head over to an mp3 music blog, listen to the music, get shorter to the point reviews (honest) and skip all the bullshit, add's, etc.

I don't know how to do the quote thing, but yeah Dalen, you are so right. Pitchfork is useful for what it is, but I got Land of Talk, and Little Ones based on Tune a day. That to me is more useful than some arrogant music review site. i trust the people here. Such a great community of music lovers. This site is grassroots, and it is pretty spot on. People with excellent taste reside here, and for that I am grateful. Pitchfork is useful (in Fall 2004 I bought seven copies of Arcade Fire and then sold them for $50 bucks a copy on ebay later that week) but for the most part I am turned onto new indie shit on a daily basis here. Group hug. Tune A Day, Largeheated Boy, Chromewaves, is far more influential than some snob website. Keep it up Ob.

Just click the "quote" button in the corner of the box you want to quote

Does that mean that I'm officially more useful than Pitchfork is now? :D

If Jet's first album was released on a minor label and happened to get virtually no radio airplay, half of you haters would be all over it. (see Rhinobucket)

I like Jet. It beats the shit out of what's playing on the radio today. Like The Black Crowes or Wolfmother, I don't care that some people deride their music as being "derivative". Although they're not the most original of bands, they know how to write a good melodic tune.

...and fuck Pitchfork with uh, a pitchfork.

Pitchfork is biased, but it's bias is fairly consistent and they review 5 albums a day. So, it's useful. I pretty much know how I will react to music they review based on the genre and the score they give it.

There are worse things than Jet, but they seem to take themselves a little too seriously. I feel the same way about Wolfmother. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the music press in Australia.

I don't care about jet, but it's amazing how quick everyone is to defend them based SOLELY on the merits of their OTHER ALBUM, disregarding the fact that this "review" was an ALBUM REVIEW, not a BAND REVIEW, which is something I'm pretty sure doesn't EXIST.
