A few things. I'm definitely not a Jet fan, though that third single from their first album I did enjoy. Stern broke the guy down in late '04/early '05 about how it is about his father. A priceless interview, btw. Stern talked to this kid, who just got married, and really nailed what that song was about. Lead singer went into defensive mode about it. Great radio, but they take themselves way too seriously. I think it is that solipsistic sense of entitlement that I have a problem with. Again, I did like that piano-driven song. Help me Obs on the title. I think it was their lack of humor that turned me off. I'm sure there will be major backlash about how I should just listen to the music on it's merits, but sometimes a band's personality can sour me on them. For instance, not that I ever wanted to get into the Darkness, but they were on Loveline a couple years back, and the moment they realized this show was about damaged teenagers, they freaked. They thought the show was gonna be some Darkness circle jerk, and when that wasn't the case, they walked out on Drew and Adam. Priceless stuff to listen to Adam goof on them the rest of the show. Anyway, back to P4K, I loved their interview with TVotR, but that Silversun Pickups review, 5.0, was a joke. First off that chick is not cute, ADJUST YOUR MONITOR. Look, I reflexively think all chicks in bands are hot, but this girl has a third degree case of the uglies. Take Kissing Families and All the Go Inbetweens from Pikul and replace the two weakest tracks from Carnavas and we are talking classic album. I love how P4K will bash any album they don't have an early review for. What are they gonna say about Dog Problems, for instance, once they get around to reviewing it? Already this year they have shit-canned Sound Team and Birdmonster long after blogs were touting them. And they never seem to have much praise for British acts either (aside from Bloc Party). If they don't have the first word on a band they are hell bent on having the last. Having said that, I've been an avid follower of their site since '99. Ryan likes to say there is no cohesive Pitchfork agenda (the writers are free to say what they want, blah, blah, blah) but there is definitely favortism and on the other side of the coin, derision, for certain bands that is nothing short of calculated. (Hold Steady, we suck your collective cocks, 'cuz you are originally from the Minnesota area). Claims of objectivity are ludicrous. Discuss.
This guy needs to post more, Stern fanship notwithstanding.
