How you liking that Honeydogs? Don't recall reading any comments. Hope you like it after all the times I went on about it here. Guess they don't have a very big following around these parts. Or maybe they just aren't as good as I think they are ;)

What's your favorite PJH? I've always been partial to the raw and dynamic sound of the first one, Dry, but pretty much like them all.

It finally arrived in the mail today, two weeks too slow for the Shmoo poll (not that my vote would've helped any). First reaction is that it exceeds my expectations. The Honeydogs have shown remarkable growth over their last 3 albums. Seen A Ghost was undistinguished 2nd tier alt.country (sold it), then Here's Luck added a sweet Lennon/McCartney melodic sense to their sound (loved it), and they've continued the upward trajectory with this new one. In a lot of ways, 10,000 Years sounds like the album I've been waiting for Jon Brion to make. In other words, I'm liking it a whole lot. It's criminal that it's got such limited release.

I liked Dry a lot, but I thought the sound quality was abysmal. I've never been able to figure out if it was bad mix or if I'd fluked into buying a flawed disc. Otherwise, I give the nod to Rid Of Me or Stories From The City... - but, really, she hasn't put out a bad disc IMO. Although I still think her best is yet to come.

Yeah, it didn't get much promotion and had one of those limited releases where you can't really buy it when the reviews come out until a few months later. Talk about shooting your own foot.

Funny that a lot of people say that but I love the sound of that first one. So much dynamic range. Almost like some of those early 90s Albini recordings for bands like Slint and the Wedding Present. Sounds like a hot band in your garage. Got a real sound of electricity in the air. You really have to crank the volume even though the peaks are set at max because they didn't really use any compression. Albini did record the next one but he'd moved into that Nirvana grunge sound by then so lots of compression and guitar edginess. But reading some of the comments at amazon, you aren't alone in thinking it sounds bad. The recent Albini recorded Electrelane album is kind of like that first PJ Harvey album in that it's recorded and mastered with lots of dynamic range so is much quieter than most modern CDs which are horribly compressed. Sounds so nice and open to me. Unrestricted. Live :)

That might be it. The problem is I like to load up my 5 disc carousel and work with those discs on random play. An album mixed like Dry just cannot be played in that way, unless I go to the trouble of finding 4 more similarly mastered albums.

I'd love to see some form of industry standard implemented (if it's even possible), because it's getting damn hard to make a mix that doesn't dramatically shift in volume from song to song. Either that or I'd like the ability to even the output levels like back in the days of cassette tapes.

This and the ability to record analog from vinyl is the reason I bought a CDR for the stereo set-up.
