Question:
Would you rather have a band like Ratt's career where you are kings of LA for a few years and for a couple or years, one of the biggest bands in the world. Selling a few million records and then fading into obscurity?
Or
Would you rather have a middle of the road indie band's career that never goes Platinum or even Gold but each record sells about 30-50,000 units and you have massive critical acclaim? You have an okay life and get by on a meager budget for the next 20 years.
i would definitely take option B. option A would be crazy - always touring, press, constant pressure about the future, etc.
despite initial worries about money, any band who moves units in that 30k+ neighborhood is probably landing deals for their music to be used in advertising or movies and whatnot. that can net a cool sum of money, especially in an ad for a large corporation. and even though a small rabid fanbase would develop, there wouldn't be constant pressure for the next thing all the time because there'd be an album release, tour, and then fade into regular life while taking time off and preparing for new material.
