If i got it straight, A-Rod's deal after this season is as follows....
3 years - 82 million.
the average salary prob wont be 25 mil per year again.
but he could sign a 8 year (taking him till he is 40) for close to 200 million again, once Boras pitches his past presewnt and future against Soriano's recent mega-deal.
if a-rod doesnt opt out, and gets seriously hurt in the next 3 years, there goes the mega contract
so it comes down to 82 million and take your chances, or a 200 million (??) deal taking you to the end of your career?
I'd love for him to stay.. Hey the Rangers are paying 40% of the deal.....But as a business man, he'd be foolish not too.
Cashman has said he wont talk extension even after the deal. He seems intent on not going nuts over superstars anymore.....
so, i think a-rod walks.....unfort....despite how this year turns out....i hope I'm wrong.
Well if i agreed with you on the options maybe. I don't think anyone would give A-Rod a $200 million contract. How many clubs do you think would even be in the bidding at a $150 million price tag knowing that they were taking on the risk of an injury or a drop in performance in the outyears. I can't claim to be an expert but I don't think you can get insurance coverage on contracts of that length which is why people hate going that long on someone.
If you assume a $160 figure, than what you are talking about is opting out for an additional $78 spread over 5 years. Yes, you can bank that if you get an injury but a healthy and productive arod would probably earn more than the $78. So the risk would be spread both ways and he'd have to go to one of a few teams that might consider paying that much (Boston?, Mets?, Dodgers?...is there anyone else?)...I can see that only making a lot of sense if he hates playing in NY and if that's the case, strike the mets from that list too. He probably did hate NY to some degree prior to the start of this year but if he continues having a monster season, I think any bad will both ways will be long gone before he has to make that decision.
