When I was a Christian in the early 90s, I listened to NIN. I can't say that things he said never bothered me. But I listened to him because he is good at what he does, and I saw him as someone who was genuinely honest with what was going on inside his head. But yeah, "You're God is dead and no one cares" used to get to me. But it actually made me want to know why he thinks that way. Of course, these are non-issues with me now as I consider myself to be more on the agnostic side of things.
To those who think that the only genuine Christian artists that exist are David Bazaan, Sufjan Stevens, Bono, Jeremy Enigk, or R Kelly - I can't fault you for being misinformed. But if you say something like "all (or 99.9%) of Christian music sucks" I would think you could at least know what Christian music is and be able to back it up with something other than a grocery list of what sells in CCM. Popular CCM will always, for the most part, suck (kinda like mainstream music if you think about it). The niche market for Christian type artists is a lot larger than you think it is and extends well beyond POD, Switchfoot, and Amy Grant. Not all artists who have Christian beliefs want to save you, ban gay marriage, vote for Bush, or push an agenda (and I can provide authentic manifestations of evidence that back this up).
Here is a semi-successful indie label ran by the ex-bassist for Starflyer 59 that primarily sells music done by Christian artists. This label had limited Christian market distribtution in the late 90s but now has none whatsoever. Is this what you think about when you think "Christian artist?"

Or do you think more along the lines of this?---->

By the way, I was kidding about R Kelly.
