Thanks for posting that, I didn't see it all over the news all day.
a) just because you take away the firearms, doesn't mean things won't happen. Take your country for instance--just a simple internet search turned up:
Quote:
In the year 2002/2003, over 85% of firearms used to commit murder were unregistered. In 1997-1999, more than 80% of the handguns confiscated were never legally purchased or registered in Australia. Knives are used up to 3 times as often as firearms in robberies. The majority of firearm related deaths are suicides, of which many involved the use of 'hunting rifles'.
b) Your gun laws are similar:
Quote:
State laws govern the possession and use of firearms in Australia. These laws were largely aligned under the 1996 National Agreement on Fireams. Anyone wishing to possess or use a firearm must have a Firearms Licence and, with some exceptions, be over the age of 18. Owners must have secure storage for their firearms.
Before someone can buy a firearm, he or she must obtain a Permit To Acquire. The first permit has a mandatory 28 day delay before it is first issued. In some states (e.g. Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales), this is waived for second and subsequent firearms of the same class. For each firearm a "Genuine Reason" must be given, relating to pest control, hunting, target shooting, or collecting. Self-defence is not accepted as a reason for issuing a licence, though it may be legal under certain circumstances to use a legally-held firearm for self-defence.
Each firearm in Australia must be registered to the owner by serial number. Some states allow an owner to store or borrow another person's registered firearm of the same category.
Excuse me, legal eagle, but it's goddamn impossible to acquire a license here if you don't have a farm. And even then, it's a fucking 303, basic shotgun or similar.
I don't mean to sound like a left-winger cocksucker, but hot shit you guys have to do something.
And I'm pretty sure that after the
Port Arthur Massacre, the laws were stringently tightened, and nothing even vaguely similar has happened since.
Of course this doesn't take into account the fact that American Culture breeds and breathes Psychopaths, but it would go a long fucking way.
It's funny, because (I've met quite a few Americans in my time, though obviously not as many as you fine people) Australians seem infinitely more violent to me, but we don't kill people all that often. We just beat the shit out of them, punch them in the back, kick them while they're down and crush beer pots into their faces.
If nothing else, I at least admire your conviction and ability to see something through.
But, on top of all of this. We don't have any fucking gun shops. Anywhere. I wouldn't even know where to get one if I was going to off myself.
