"John The Baptist (Holy John)" just popped up on random in my iTunes and I was really digging it. Of course, it then occurred to me that there is a gaping hole in my music collection (again)... being that I have no Al in there.

Is New York City (You're A Woman) the place to begin? Or are there better choices? IS a compilation all I really need?

Once again, Obner, I look to you.

By the way, thank you for all of your advice in the past. You have pointed me in the direction of some pretty great music.

Thank you.

I really love all his late 60s and early 70s albums. New York City (You're A Woman) is probably my favourite Al Kooper album, and would highly recommend it. Then grab Easy Does It and I Stand Alone. I have all his albums so I can't recommend a compilation but as an album artist, I think you should stick to the long players. That being said, I believe I did a tenner actually.

I'll go pick up that tenner, if it's still out there; and the LPs you recommended.
Thanks!

EDIT: I did a search before posting this thread, and it did not come up.

Most of them are good. I Stand Alone still stands up well, despite the between-song sound effects ala 1969. From a few years ago, Black Coffee is fine as well.

Yeah, Al still brings it, even in the latter years.

I'd put "I Stand Alone" over "Easy Does It" and possibly on par with "New York City (You're A Woman)" but can't go wrong with most Al Kooper. The instrumental albums are my least favorite but they are good for what they are.

If you do want to go the greatest hits route, there is a double disc comp with one disc a best of and the other a comp of rarities. I'm a completist with Al Kooper and bought it for the rarities but it would also be a good introduction.

Surprising that nothing would come up in a search given what big fans Tentoze, Dumpjack and I are. I'd have thought my cd purchase thread would have come up if nothing else as I've bought almost all his albums over the last five years. Seeing him again in January. Can't Wait.

I'll co-sign that double disk, Rare & Well Done. The Well Done disk cuts a pretty broad swath across his career, and the Rare disc has some great shit on it, as well.

EDIT: I did a search before posting this thread, and it did not come up.

You know I'm bored and the idea that a search for Al Kooper would yield nothing on Obner has been bugging me for days so I did search not with the intention of bitching at todd but just at either confirming that we really don't discuss our favorites at all anymore or making myself feel a little better about the music content on the board.

A "Kooper" search yielded two pages of results including several tenners related threads that DJ's tenner was buried in. Also, there were three listmanias which included Kooper albums including mine and DJ's which included the album you were asking about. Also several "what are your current musical obsession threads" in which DJ and I mentioned Al Kooper including one such thread started by Todd.

This isn't meant to chastize todd for creating a new thread. I'm happy to have more Al Kooper related discussion here and there indeed wasn't one with al kooper in the title. I just feel a little better knowing that a little more digging would have provided some information relevant to the question.

EDIT: and this might be why that song is in your itunes.

That is absolutely why it is on my iTunes.
And, yeah, it wasn;t that there were no mentions of Al Kooper, I just didn't see a thread dedicated to him; hence, this new one.
