I intended to wipe and reload my iPod this morning, and bit the bullet and decided to go through iTunes to make sure the software is up-to-date, etc. When I plugged the iPod in, got a pop-up window that said something to the effect that the iPod is not configured correctly and the audio/video may not work properly. Now I see that iTunes isn't even recognizing it. WTF do I do to make this right?

Lesson 1. Never update itunes.

Actually, this is a big fear of mine. I've got a 4-year old ipod, and feel like at any moment it could crash, or not be recognized.

Occasionally my iPod acts stupid when I plug it in. If you are at the same stage unplug it; do a reset (button lock on then off; press the up key on the wheel and center button simultaneously until it resets); reboot iTunes on your puter and plug it in again. If you still have problems it really shouldn't matter, cuz you say you are reloading everything anyway.

I do all the upgrades on iTunes and my iPod. To each... I make sure I back up my tunes and iTunes files regularly, but even then haven't needed that for a long time.

Sometimes it isn't that its not backed up, but rather that I don't feel like pulling out cds again and re-upping songs/albums to another ipod.

What free software is out there that does the trick.

I didn't update iTunes, but I did let it scan the hard drive in order to make it load up its library from the files (this is separate from it not seeing the iPod, BTW). The fucking POS has been grinding since I started this thread this morning "determining playback volume" or some such shit. it's 11k files in, with around 6k to go. And then I STILL need to get it to recognize the iPod. Fuck me, I hate iTunes.

i haven't updated my itunes software in years, but still my ipod occasionally tweaks itself. the latest is that non-album tracks are no longer listed under a blank option under "Albums." i'm not terribly happy about that development.

The other week I left my ipod in my pants pocket when I washed them. At first it didn't work, then the screen looked fucked up for a while, and now it's back to normal. I'm a bit amazed it survived the washer and dryer.

Dang. I would think it being submerged in water, then subjected to high heat would've busted it all up. I'm with RB...maybe yr w/d is for crap. That or you were doing 60lbs. of laundry and it really didn't get washed nor dried.

My clothes are clean, for sure. I'm surprised it's still alive, and considered it lucky when the screen was fucked up, but now it's back in perfect condition except for being scratched up.

Does anyone here have an 80GB video classic? I want to ask you if yours is doing something mine does; not sure if it is normal.

This sounds intriguing.

Actually, that shouldn't matter. If it's a 30gig I would assume it was manufactured around the same time as mine, or maybe it's even a little older.

1)When you start yours up after it's been "asleep" - does the hard drive make one or two loud "clicking" sounds? Not like a normal spin and shuffle like you expect to hear from any hard drive being accessed - but more like a "click"?

2) If you put your ear up to the back of it and listen as the hard drive is spinning (i.e. after you select a new song from a different album or playlist, and it switches to the new item) how loud is the hard drive? Mine has a chronic buzz and whine that my other two iPods (Shuffle and Touch) don't have.

The reason I am asking, and being so nitpicky is this: I recently took my iPod in for repair because the HD was clicking loudly / repititively and freezing, then one day everything just disappeared off of it and I couldn't access it with iTunes anymore. I got it back from Futureshop with an invoice saying the Hard Drive and Battery had been replaced. I'm a little paranoid that something is amiss here because even though I can access it with iTunes now, and it is functioning properly - the HD sounds pretty much just like it did before it went completely kaput on me. The only difference is that - so far -there have been no repetitive clicks and freezing.

My warranty expires at the end of June. I'm wondering if the techs who repair these things for Futureshop just got it working with some cajoling and didn't replace the HD at all, just thinking it would work long enough for me to be off warranty, or at least cause enough additional back and forth and delays so that my warranty will expire in the process, or I might just say fuck it all together and buy a new one or something.

What do you think?

Mine is pretty damn quiet. I just booted it up and if I hold it right up against my ear I can faintly hear the clicking, but barely. The spinning makes an even quieter sound up in the dog hearing frequency. I cannot hear anything if it's more than 6 inches from my ear and my hearing's still pretty good.

Mine's sitting on the table about a foot and a half away from me and I can hear it clicking.
